When Hurricane Andrew went through Florida I was working in the needlework and craft industry. I want to pass on to those in areas where people are coming for temporary (we hope!) housing, activities which really helped those with similar experiences after Hurricane Andrew.
Once the initial needs are met and the folks have settled in their temporary home they quickly become very bored. Crafts are a way for them to relax. Those who have enjoyed crafts in the past will be happy with supplies being made available. Many do not know what to do with the supplies. They need teachers or at least activity coordinators to give them ideas.
If you live near a shelter and would be willing to receive supplies and deliver them to the shelter please let us know. I do not suggest that we start sending tons of fabric. With no machines and little experience this fabric would be wasted. Instead please prepare kits. Beads for jewelry or hair braiding would be good, simple cross stitch on large count fabric, stamped embroidery including an embroidery hoop, felt and fabric projects which can be glued, knitting needles, crochet hooks, yarn and hand sewing projects. Kids crafts are especially important.
I am still in contact with some organizations in the craft industry. If I receive any information I will pass it along. In the meantime I would like anyone living near a shelter to contact me privately.
