Alpaca Batting

Has anyone ever tried Alpaca batting ?

I have seen some advertised but haven't heard any personal reviews.

No, but I've also seen it advertised. Sounds wonderful.

Howdy!

Oh, the alpaca batting was just fine, but the llama out in centerfield was spectacular, hurling the ball to the guanaco at first base, where the alpaca was "Out!"

...that's the U.S. version; on the other side of the world the alpaca batting protected his wicket while scoring a run. Well played! The llama was up next but was so busy throwing kisses he almost missed his turn at bat.

Bonnie it wan't any really any dearer than any other batting.

DM made a knitted vest and cardigan from alpaca for DH a number of years ago and he loved the lightness and warmth of the yarn.

I would imagine that it would drape really well.

When I went to Sisters in Oregon for the outdoor quilt show, I called DH & told him how beautiful that part of Oregon is. We had been looking for a place to move to, so he did some research & booked us at a B & B in Bend, OR., so we could go up & sniff the area out. He booked us at an alpaca ranch (he knows I am crazy for animals). The couple that own the ranch are retired airline employees from Seattle. They had heard that alpaca ranchers do fairly well. Problem with them was that the wife grew attached to each new alpaca, so she couldn't sell them. She ended up having them sheared for their wool, so I guess it wasn't a total loss:) We had a great time, fell in love with the Bend area (but are still in Northern California), she let me help her feed the alpacas and the ducks. I played with the Maine Coon Cat & the Akbash dog, who my husband fell in love with. It was one of my favorite getaway trips!

We have an Alpaca outlet near us - sweaters, socks, jackets, etc. not batting - and the owner always stresses that Alpaca is not wool and that people allergic to wool will be ok with alpaca. Can't vouch for it as I'm not allergic to wool although I do find some a bit scratchy. I have an alpaca jacket and its sooo soft. When I bought it it was going to be for 'best' but I like it so much that 'best' = often!
