Another Fabric Question

Ok, Thank you for the info on storing my fabric. Now this is for those that wash their fabric before doing anything with it. After you wash it ,do you all iron it right away, or fold and put away until you need it? If it is put away on shelves do you wash again and iron again or what?

This is for future doing, don't know how long I have left to be near the computer. I always wash first, but due to" things" not all of it was ironed before putting away. In fact allot of it is stuffed into big garbage bags. DH wants me to sort it by color and put in boxes that way. He is very funny sometimes, I don't think he understands how much I have and how soon we need to get out of here, or who all is doing the packing and lifting. Last time we moved we had our sons helping us and he was able to work. I'm going to have to hog tie him to a chair to keep him from picking stuff up as it is. Now I just need to find a house. Thanks for any info you can pass along. Country Sharon

I wash, dry, fold, and put on shelves. I tend to root through my fabric a lot, so ironing it before shelving would be a waste for me.

After I put it on the shelves, it almost never needs washing again. (Well, except for the fabric the dog threw up on. But that was extraordinary circumstances. *grin*). I do iron it just before using.

Hope that helps. Now get yourself a house!

I do exactly what Kathy does. (On this one. Now if I could just quilt like she does!!)

Like Kathy A., I wash first, then put away. Only I stuff mine in plastic stoarge boxes boxes. I iron before I cut, and I only iron enough to cut. If I've got 2 yards, and only cut a few strips, then that's all I iron!

If you can find out-of-the-ordinary colored garbage bags, get those! We used some bright yellow bags we bought from our nephew who was selling them as a fund-raiser. That way, it didn't look like trash!!!!!

Sure you can! I'm only about 700 quilts ahead of you, that's all. :) (Now if only I could quilt like one of my friends, who has done over 3000!

*grin*)

I wash/dry/iron it regardless of when I am going to use it. That way, when I am ready, all I have to do is pull it out. SOmetimes it may need to be ironed again, but I don't rewash it.

I iron it (maybe not right away, but sometime during the week or so after I wash it) and then fold it and put it away. I store it on shelves, and I generally find I have to do some pressing again before I use it. Hmmmm, sounds like I'm wasting time to iron it the first time, doesn't it? I'll probably still continue to iron it though -- it seems to take up less space that way!

Me too---then touch-up with iron if needed when I use it. It lies so much flatter---& therefore takes up less room---& therefore I can get MORE!!!!!

Hullo Sharon I wash, dry and iron before I put my fabric away. Then, when I need to cut some from any piece it is 'almost' ready! - I do then press again enough for what I need that time, but it doesn't need much more than a smooth to get the fold creases out. Good luck with all the upcoming stressful situations. . In article , Country Sharon writes

Very, very good point. Please dont use bags that look like garbage bags.. Boxes are free, easier to stack... or as Polly and Wendy suggest, ungarbagy bags.. pleeeeease.... Hugs, good luck on the move. I dont envy you. Diana

My Sad Garbage Bag Tale I've not told this for several years so it might be new to many. When we made our move here in '88, I used garbage bags to pack my clothes, set them in the bedroom closet and closed the door. DH recruited untrained help (his sons and their half brother) and confusion reigned. When we arrived here, I discovered I had only shoes and underwear, the clothes in my suitcase, and a few unwashed ones in a laundry bag. I needed no intelligence to figure out out where the bags had gone--but not WHY did they loaded the bag of old scruffy shoes that should have been left at the curb.

I heard a story of how one mom hid all the kids xmas prezzies in garbage bags and hid the bags in one area of the garage. Yup. One time her dh cleaned the garage.

Good luck with the house hunt! I wash everything. Most of it also gets ironed, except for occasional huge pieces. Ironing is a chance to really look at the fabric surface. If I find a big flaw (slub, hole, dye in the wrong place, etc.) I mark the spot and the selvedge with bright colored thread. This doesn't happen too often except with my flea market purchases, but I've found bad spots even in expensive fabric. And it's hard to take back when it's something I bought on my travels. My stash is sorted by color and folded to fit in wire baskets on a wheeled rack. When we moved last year, the movers just wrapped each rack in bubble wrap, fabric and all. Roberta in D
