applique - just when you are convinced it is something you will never do............

your words come back to bite you on the butt!

A friend from church and also a PTA board member, asked me about paw print clip art....sent her some. Then she asked if I had ever made garden flags...nope, but why? SHe wanted to have a sample made to take before the PTA board to offer as a fundraiser item. Well............

board meeting was last night and the sample flag was a HUGE hit!!! Okay, great, money coming in the house from my sewing skills......wahoo!!! However, they want the paw print a bit bigger and they want a new sample by October 19th when the parent teacher conferences start (2 days worth of conferences). Okay...I can make a bigger paw print and I can make another sample, but..."I don't do applique"!!

Yes, I *did* utter those words, and not too long ago....ON THIS NEWSGROUP!!!!

Gues I never should have said never, huh??

Okay, had to share...little stressed, LOT happy, a teeny bit nervous

Larisa, who has to get the quilt top folded back up and off the floor so that I can get to work on the new flag sample

Hey I remember saying something like that and remember what it got me into - remember 135 flags.

When are we gonna learn to keep our mouths shut (VBG)

Go Girl! Good for you. DH keeps coming up with ideas for me to bring in $$ with my sewing. How do you explain to a man that what you do is for fun and relaxation and to have deadlines and fussy customers is not my idea of fun and relaxation.

Are you going to make all the flags people order, or are you aking a few to raffle off? Sounds like a big undertaking to me....God bless you! MAmadurk

LOL sadly, that memory was apparently visiting the rest of my common sense when I said I would try . At least they aren;t huge and I can do them as the orders come in or whatever.

I tried that, but the mantra my father kept repeating to me as I was growing up has stuck - "DO something you love, the money will come later" Apparently this is the first step into the "later" part. I also have a quilt that was commissioned...she hasn't gotten back to me when I told her the only way I could do it was if a) she provided all the material (she wants to use some curtains that she has along with 2 other fabrics) and left the design up to me. I will supply the batting, and on top of all this, she will have to pay a flat rate - she wants this done for Christmas...apparently she forgot that I do most of my sewing in the latter part of the year and thought I would have the time to make a baby quilt (this is the lady that commissioned my first quilt, then balked at the price, THEN complained because she thought it would be puffy like a store-bought comforter).

So, since the plan of an actual sewing business is on hold while I try to wade through all the legal stuff (taxes, licenses, etc.) this will at least help me decide if I can actually do the sewing work in the time i have every day.

They want me to make a few to sell at the fundraiser, then I will be making them as the orders come in. The quilt was going to be raffled off, but now it looks like that will be pushed back until the Spring Carnival fundraiser....which is okay with me, I just need to know one way or the other.

It is a big undertaking if you think in just numbers, but the more I make, the quicker I will become. And the oldest child can always help me pin pieces together b efore I applique them

I read your post to my DH -- who thinks like yours... and being the great guy he is... his comment was "yeah.. I know. Quilters think like Democrats... Quilters' Husbands think like Republicans" -- for those that know my DH -- that is SO him! gotta love him! (his reference is me... who no longer works outside the home to pay for my habit! ;-) )

You can do it! One other tip in addition to those in an earlier post....use Stitch N Tear under your applique. It stabilizes the whole thing, and just rips off the back when you are finished! It keeps the flag fabric from slipping, and keeps it from being "poked" down into the machine. Good luck....
