what do you do when..........?

.....you can't get motivated. I have all the fabrics and the templates are cut, but I can't seem to get my head around the Mariner's Compass wall hanging that I want to make my husband. It would be lovely if I could get moving on it and finish it in time for his birthday at the end of May, however, I can't seem to get the creative quilt juices flowing. Now, making things for my business and planning out clothing that I want to make for myself, those I can do just fine, but for some reason, getting back to quilting is just out of my reach.

Any ideas would be appreciated

I've notice my muse tends to abandon me at the worst times, too.

Larisa, I discovered that when I couldn't take up a big project, sometimes it helped to cut a little square (12 x 12 maybe or smaller) and just fill it with pretty fabric. No pattern, no requirements, no need to show it to anybody. Just play with the stuff that made you want to buy it in the first place. Sometimes that gets my juices going again. Play.... I think we forget that what we do is play. Good to remember sometimes.

Hugs, Good to see you back :-)

Get ready, set and don't go. Clean the SM. Run the bobbins. Put in a new needle. Tidy your cutting area and wipe the smudges off of your ruler. If that doesn't inspire you, what the heck. Sit down and enjoy looking at it. Polly

I have been in a funk off and on for a couple of years. I get moving in fits and spurts and has really gotten a lot better recently. I asked about the same question and got some good feedback here.

-Make yourself spend 10 minutes (or any time limit) and just sew for that time.

-go through your fabric and organize it

-do some charity work. a quick, simple project.

-find a really brain dead project to make. It might just be a nine-patch or a kit but something with no thinking, just sewing.

-go find a ufo and try to get to that.

You might just want to get out and work in the garden since it is springtime and there is always a lot of that to do. My dad advised me that sometimes your creativity just takes a break temporarily and sometimes it can leave you for longer or forever. That is really ok. You have lots of interests. Go with those. I found out years ago when I did a lot of sewing for money I just flat out didn't enjoy myself for the most part. YOu might want to think about that. I hope your motivation returns. I bet it will if you give yourself a chance. Taria

Motivation not really required! All you need to do is cut a few pieces, however many you can manage in 10 or 15 minutes. Then go off and do something else. Cut a few more tomorrow. Probably by the 3rd day, you'll be so fed up with not doing it that you will just sit down and sew a compass :-) You've done the thinking part already (choosing fabric), the rest is just cutting and stitching. Lots of times when I can't get going with the sewing I have found it is because I might not feels as good as on other days. I might have a slight temp, or I almost have a little headache, or maybe I am just tired.. Then I will just mess around with my sewing area and try to get things ready to sew the next day. I think a person needs numerous creative outlets. I tend to switch between Quilting, which is my big focus right now, and woodworking, which I did for a living and hobby. I also have some needlepoint tendencies that show up from time to time. Clothing construction takes over when I need a break from quilting but still want to sew and then there is reading. When I get a good book, I put all of the above on hold and sit down and read, read, read, until the end of the book. Then when the weather turns nice, I take off most mornings on my bike and don't return till afternoon. Whatever you do, try to cultivate other interests. Not that they will supplant your main interest of quilting, if that is your main interest, but the other things will stretch your mind and give you a renewed enthusiasm for whatever has gone stale when you return to it.

Sometimes we just need to take a breather. :-)

You wait for opening day of trout season and your DH leaves at 6am to go stand in a cold stream to chase trout and you have the whole house to yourself and the QIs (Kirby dog and Gypsy cat). Nothing but quilting on my agenda for today! If it's a good fishing day, perhaps I'll quilt tomorrow as well!
