What do ya think? Mariners Compass........

So I have started on the Mariners comapss and I have picked out the fabric, drawn out all the pp templates and I have 1/4 of the main compass done. Now I know it is only 1/4 of the compass and it is a crappy picture but I was just wondering if I could get some opinions on what ya'll think about it so far. It will end up being a king sized quilt with the full compass as a medallion in the centre and a 1/4 compass facing inward from each corner, I want to add some other elements as well but I havent totally decided on those yet. The compass will be 43" accross and have 48 points.

This will be my 2nd attempt to bring home a ribbon from the Ontario Juried Quilt show next year! My first attempt got me accepted last year but alas... no ribbon :(

It's lovely! The points look very crisp and sharp -- a good thing in a MC quilt.

looks gorgeous... I really like the "floating" aspect of the additional points... can't wait to see the finished block/quilt!

Beautiful fabric choice! Question for you: are you going to piece the points into the background? Or will this be applique? I lvoe mariners compass and haven't had nerve to try one.

It is actually pieced but because I was lazy and didn't want to go upstairs to find a better place to take the pic you can't really see the background because it is white and as you can see, so is my sewing table!

Mariners compass is my sort of unicorn (ala Gone in 60 seconds) I guess you could say. My boyfriend bought me "The unltimate quilting book" last year for christmas and in that book it said that the mariners compass was one of the most difficult patterns to peice, well, you know, after reading that I had to give it a try. I looked and looked for books with a nice pattern, I didn't want to make just any old compass, as it turned out any book I could actually get my hands on just didn't have the right pattern so I designed my own, then I used that design and broke it up into sections and drew out my own Paper piecing templates, half tested them and got bored so I got the fabric I wanted to do it with and just went straight to doing the real thing.

If you want to give it a try, and I can get a template this big copied somwhere I would be happy to send copies of them to you if you don't want to do your own. With the paper peicing it is really pretty easy.

I think it's going to be stunning. I really like your color choices and the orange (or red) is a great contrast to the blue. Good job!

I got so busy looking at all your beautiful quilts, that I forgot what you asked us to look at - so I had to go back and reread your message. :-)) What beautiful work you do and your MC is going to be just as gorgeous I'm sure. A big WOW from me.
