basic sewing

Maybe the aspect of FINISHING the mending FAST gave it some appeal. You must have gotten a real sense of satisfaction to work through the pile and get it done...where as quilting is such a slower process. When I get bored or stuck, I take a break and make a cloth basket or a tote bag, something that can be done in an hour or so. I'm sure DS was just as thrilled to get it done as you were to tackle it. : ) Donna

I still enjoy making clothes for myself and my wife. Even though I do mostly quilting, I sometimes get the bug to do something of a clothing nature. I sewed two zen meditation Kimono's for my wife and myself, some time ago, along with all the inner garments, and the Hakama apron for the front, and it was very rewarding and fun. Also it would have cost me far more to buy them from a finished source. I think if the project is interesting and different, I want to do it. If it is just making another shirt or pair of pants, for myself. I would rather buy it from L.L. Bean. I don't mind doing repairs and alterations at any time as they can be knocked out rather quickly.

I, too, enjoy mending/alterations for my thirty-something kids. For my daughter, who's into designer stuff, I often do Euro hems on her outrageously priced jeans. With my son, it's mending tears in his Walmart work jeans with my free-motion foot. I don't make too many clothes any more, even for myself.

My current project, which isn't really quilting - although several here, including Leslie, are working them - is a wrapped clothesline basket. I started at a guild meeting 3 weeks ago, and instead of starting small, I'm ending up with a basket that wil use most of a 200- foot package of line. I'll try to post a picture soon - I haven't decided if I want to update Webshots or use another photo site.
