When I got my Janome, it was a gift and as given to me, there included a box of a dozen metal bobbins, I didn't realise until recently that these were an extra the shop had thrown in, and didn't come with the machine. I really don't notice any difference between them and plastic bobbins.

I went to my Guild's Christmas party and gift exchange last night and there were 3 Side Winders as gifts. They got passed around several times (it was a Chinese exchange) and everyone loved them. I am hoping to get one for Christmas even though some of you think it is dumb. I will be sure to tell you if it is better then my machine and why.

Since there has been so much discussion of bobbins, I have to confess that I found more metal bobbins in one of my boxes. I have no use for them, so if anyone would like them please email me. I have 5.

Now I know why I/we need one!

My guild does charity quilts, and one of our machines does not wind bobbins well at all and it's bobbins don't fit on the other machines winder.

I knew that I don't need one at home because I always wind a bunch of them when I start a project.

You must remember that I come from a family of sewers who: Only bought 3 needles at a time and if the last one broke all sewing stopped until the next time we went to town. And the machines we owned only had 1 bobbin, we didn't know that you could have more than 1, I was surprised when my Bernina came with 5+ bobbins and that they sold them in tubes of 10 or more. I bought 2 tubes.

I have learned so much from this group over the last 5-6-7 years that I have been reading it. This group is the reason I bought the Bernina, and the Featherweights, and rotary cutters and mats ! ! !

And I spent 4 days at quilt camp the week before Thanksgiving !

Thank you, Bonnie, in Middletown, VA

Howdy!

Insert jewelry hooks for instant earrings. Put a little bow on them & hang them on your sewing room holiday tree. Get a bag of those tiny spools of thread, multi-colors, from the dollar or other discount store (about 50 3/4" spools to a bag), grab some pretty cord, ribbon, string or selvedges you've been saving, and string up a pretty little garland of spools & bobbins. Attach to wreath w/ other leftover sewing stuff:

Sew them to the bottom of a curtain, string them together like jinglebells, glue them on a sign for your sewing room, tie them to the ends ofribbons for your holiday packages, attach them to hair bows, attach a magnet & put them on B-fly's refrigerator, wrap packages inold sewing pattern papers & top w/ a shiny bobbin, use a bobbin instead ofa large decorative button on your tiny wallets & iPod holders, attach them to a belt like conchos, add them to napkin rings. Embellish w/ beads & sparklies as desired.

If my Janome was supposed to use metal bobbins she would have come w/ metal bobbins.

I had some Janome metal bobbins from DSs Janome. Tried them in my bottom loading Janome but it didn't like them. I presume it was the extra weight.

Just wondering if that is what happened to your Janome you don't like.

Perhaps there is a difference.

Save them and wind thread on them for your next portable hand applique project. A couple of bobbins are a lot less bulky than spools of thread. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I will try a plastic bobbin when I finish the current one, but it's wound with aurifil, so it could be a while! Actually my machine sews very nicely, it's a bit noisy, but it doesn't seem to come from the bobbin. The main problem I have with it is it's shape, it doesn't have any table out front the way Pfaffs, Berninas and others have, which means as soon as there is any bulk I have to have my hand at a funny angle and it hurts really quickly! There were a couple of other problems that servicing ironed out.

My 6500 came with a plastic extension table. However when I only had my old Janome I enquired about one at my Janome dealers and they were available. Quite expensive though - though most add-ons for anything are.

What I would really like though is the machine set level in the table - that would be wonderful.
