Dad update

Thanks to every last one of you who sent your thoughts and prayers...and also to those of you who took the time to simply read my message. Dad made it through the surgery. The doctor told my mother it couldn't have gone any better. He's being very mean and combative in recovery, so I don't know how that will come out. Hopefully they will find a sedation that will work. We will just have to wait and see what the long term outcome will be. But I do appreciate your kind thoughts, crossed fingers and heartfelt prayers.

My goodness, Kathyl, what a load you are carrying. We continue to hold you close. So pleased your Dad has made it through surgery. Don't worry about the recovery room folks, they are very special people and will take the best of care of your Dad. Polly

Whew! That's good news, Kathyl. Thanks for letting us know. I turn into a raving axe-murderer-type lunatic after sedation. I always warn them, but they never believe how 'naughty' I will be. It happens to some of the nicest people! VBG I'll continue praying for a complete and speedy recovery for your dad.

That's very good news, Kathy. I've decided from talking to friends that this is a very common reaction in recovery for older folks. My dad was the same way. If I may offer some info., my dad did not snap out of it very good and kept getting more and more confused, even hallucinating. It turned out it was a drug called Lortab they were giving him for pain. Lots of seniors just can't tolerate it. Once they figured this out, and stopped it, he started to mentally improve rapidly. Hope your Dad continues to improve with each day.

Thanks Sherry. If he doesn't seem to snap out of this in a timely manner, I'll have to do some investigating on his drugs. We do have one big advantage here ....my DH is a geriatric physician and knows which drugs are better for seniors than others. (The problem is that we are in different states!) And you're right, some of the drugs the general population takes without problems can set off oldsters in a different manner! We've already had that happen with a previous hospitalization. Sigh.

My hubby (41) went through the same reaction ... when he came out of surgery for his ACL, he began demanding the videotape from his surgery (don't ask me why!!) and when he was told he couldn't have it, he was furious!! He nagged for a long time about that durn videotape ... and he doesn't even remember that now!!

He ended up mellowing out after that, though, and it was like a second honeymoon!! Still in the recovery room, he told me I was the most beautiful woman in the world (I'm not even the most beautiful woman in our house!! LOL!!) and how much he loved me ... that lasted until about three hours after we brought him home ... It was nice while it lasted. :)

I hope your Dad does some sweet-talkin' to your Mom!! It sure sounds like she deserves it!! :)
