Sandy, I looked at the book sale and saw several I'd like to order . . . but the bookshelf where my quilting books abide is packed to the brim. I asked a neighbor if anyone was having a garage sale and she suggested that I donate my 'not gonna look at them again' quilting books to the church's quilting guild library. Ah. Yes. I can do that and even feel a little bit good about it. So. Now. All I have to do is donate the same number of books that I buy. Right? That ought to work. Polly

Give away books! Nooooooo! Books are, are, are children! You can't get rid of... books! (LOL)

But then maybe that's why we are living with his-'n'-hers copies of various titles and our walls are covered in shelves. It IS good insulation, however!

We are trying to keep our 'little-problem' down to about a yard a year, and the Kindle helps, but it's a serious addiction, for which there seems no cure. 12-Step anyone? They are, after all, taking up some good gadget room...

*gasp*...oh my... where is the fainting couch...scent bottle, who has the scent bottle...*gasp*

Give away books? Is that even legal!? You know, the minute you give one away you will be looking for information that is in there, and only in there.

Aha! I now see the cunning plan! If you give them to the library you can still use them, but the library has to build new shelves instead of you. A plan so cunning you can stick a tail on it and call it a weasel!

We rationalized the LOTR collection a while back, keeping only Himself's

3 volume library style copy, as the single big paperback was disintegrating, and my 3 volume paperback seemed to have been soaked in both sea and bathwater upon occasion...

We do, though, have fewer walls than you, they are smaller, and we don't have your 'stacks' space...

Somehow we do still have two copies of 'Kim'...

Hehehe...

I indulge in the Feral Book campaign for 'temporary literature' - the modern chick novels you get to read on trains and the like. I buy them in charity shops for pence and leave then on trains and in cafes, with a Please Read Me note in them.

Or they go back to the charity shops to be recycled.

I keep real books, and even replace them when they wear out!

Books are seriously hard to get rid of. I do try to weed out once or twice a year for the library sale. But usually keep most of them.

The Kindle helps enourmously, but leads to another problem. 'That sound's good, I'll just download it right now." I need a 12-step program for that too.

LOL! I love reading fiction on the IPod'S Kindle app. (small, goes anywhere.) But it's way too tempting to download all the "samples". Just like UFOs! IMO though, Kindle doesn't solve the quilting book issue. First, even a real Kindle device or an IPad would be a bit too small to hold a full-size page. And second, tracing designs etc. might be difficult. I'd be afraid of damaging the screen.

A co-worker is trying mightily to convince me to get a Kindle. But I am a dinosaur and just love the feel of a real book.

My sister is putting her place on the market next month and de- cluttered, getting rid of all her books "except three from the 70s". Huh? My mind cannot even comprehend that! I have my 6' high by 4' wide bookshelf in my craft room for those books. Plus a 4'x3', and 3'x3' both in the dining room for everything else. I try to keep the bodice- rippers light reading down by not bringing anything in to the house without rehoming the same number.

Life without books. Nope, just can't go there!

DH has been enjoying an electronic book reader. (can't remember which one) It is good for some things but he reads 'real' books too. He is on Paperback book swap and we buy and sell books on half.com and ebay. We read a lot.
