Buying Thread online - NOT OT!

OK, I admit I'm getting spoiled by shopping online. I was searching eBay for deals on threads and was wondering if anyone has had any good or bad experiences buying sewing threads online. Any quality issues? I know that thread can "age", expecially with the cottons. I also know that some threads can be notoriously "dusty" leaving lint garbage all over the sewing place. Some of the cottons I have seen are "nameless" so I don't know what I'm buying - that's a little scary! I've been looking mostly for 100% cottons, although I've seen a few deals on bulk Gutterman & Mettler polys. (Do polys age?) I'm mostly looking for general purpose threads for patchwork piecing, probably 50/3 on the cotton size. I do a little machine quilting on my smaller tops also. Any thoughts friends? All the SMs around here are particularly fond of Aurifil, 100% cotton, 50/2. Ours comes from

That's a small shop that apparently is eager to keep their customers happy and they only charge real postage. None of that inflated handling and none of that "I'll fill your order when the moon is full" foolishness. Our bobbins (my Berninas and my neighbor's new Viking) will just load on miles of it and the Aurifil is also strong enough for some handsewing. (Not something I planned to try but that was the only color that would do on the Mickey Mouse I was stuffing. Really.) I'm not affiliated with backforty or Aurifil but I'm willing to change my identity if they make me an offer I can't refuse. Polly

Has anybody tried the new thread that Connecting Threads is selling? The prices are fantastic - $1.99 for a 1200 yard spool, $1.59 per spool if you buy in a set.

I just bought some of the new Robison-Anton thread -3000 yds per cone - it's approx $12 per spool. I really like it - no fuzz - easy to work with.

I dislike Gutterman thread intensely - it is so fuzzy. I bought a spool of black because that was all I could get at Joann's one night when my Viking dealer was closed. I keep threatening to throw it away - my entire machine is covered with black fuzzies when I use it.

Second you words on Aurifil and Backforty Polly. Just had a lovely email from Kathleen sorting out a very minor glich on an order. Good service, great thread. NAYY

Thanks for the link, Polly! Aurifil is my favorite thread, too -- and for the same reasons as you give. It's practically lint-free and can fit

*miles* of thread on a bobbin. I'm always surprised when I finally run out of a spool!

The next time you order thread, add in a spool of red. Kathy suggested to me one time that red would be good on the grad quilt I was doing. It was just wonderful - and quite a surprise. But then, I trust Kathy's judgment, even when she's humming "I'm bringing home a ba-by bum-ble bee". I guess we all have our little foibles. Polly

My current favorite on line vendor is Red Rock Threads. Free shipping and the best color selection I've found. I've been buying 50 weight Tire silk for hand applique and 100 weight YLI in 1000m spools for free motion machine quilting.

I buy nearly all my thread on line. It's the only way I can get the colors/weight/spool size I want. For quickie surface jobs though, my local sewing machine shop has wide selection of decorative machine stuff; like the Sulky blendables. They don't have enough cotton, though, and I think poly thread is a bad idea on a bed quilt that will get lots of tugs.

Thank you, Susan. Some colors of my Kinkamee silk for hand stitching are running low. I'll try the Tire. I've bought the Kinkamee from Handocks online but just not in the mood for the hassle. Polly

I will give a resounding second to the Aurifil thread, and Back Forty has a good price on it. There is a lot on a "spool" and it is a dream to work with.

I have also heard some good things about the new Essential thread that Connecting Threads is carrying, haven't tried any yet but do plan to.

To be honest, all the positive comment about Aurifil surprises me. I tried a spool of it and had profoundly bad luck with it. It broke and broke and broke and broke and it wasn't my Bernina's fault -- I got disgusted and threaded her with a spool of Mettler and had no further problems.

I guess I just got a bad spool?

I have some aurifil - I find it too thick for most work so I don't use it.

Jessamy, the aurifil we're talking about is so fine that you'd think it wouldn't be strong enough for our passion. Actually, it's quite strong. Perhaps you have a heavier weight. Ours says ' 50/2'. Polly "Jessamy" wrote >I have some aurifil - I find it too thick for most work so I don't use it.

maybe it is - it's on red spools (if that makes any difference)

Yes, that's it. The one we love is on orange spools - and it's not an orange that might be confused with a shade of red. These spools are seriously orange. I realize I sound like I'm trying to sell you on it, but the advantages: very little fuzzy and the ability to put lots on a bobbin do let me focus on other things. Polly

AHA now I know :-)

LOL you can try to sell all you like but aurifil doesn't fit my budget - I will stick with IKEA thread as that does fit my budget and well I can cope with fuzz - I just whiz round the spool housing every time I change the bobbin with my blusher brush and it stays nice and clean :-)

Too thick? You may have one of their heavier weight spools. I think most of the comments in favor of Auriful is for the 50 weight thread. It's thin and strong and you can get a lot of thread on a bobbin. It comes

12, 28, 40 and 50 weight. Perhaps yours isn't a 50. I've used it for years and I hate to use anything else. KJ
