chalk pounce

Hi Estelle Yes I've tried it. I was reading there is a new Press n Seal product ..........Press n Seal Freezer. It's a bit heavier and with a blue tinge. I was playing around the other day seeing if I could do what you are asking. Since I was just playing around, I didn't use a bigger needle and I didn't shorten my stitch length but it worked fine but would have been much better if I would have changed the needle and taken shorter stitches. I was reading that the ordinary Press n Seal works OK too for this, just maybe not as much mileage per sheet.

Thanks very much Ann. I do have the heavier freezer type , never thought of trying it.(it is a Christmas one with snowflakes and blue tinge). I do think I could use that and still be able to see the design. I will give it a try, if not then I can try the paper.

Oh Yes! That's now my favorite method to mark! Be sure to "wipe" "pounce" on the rough side of the paper...(Not the press and seal....real paper). That rough bit of paper pulls the chalk out of the pounce pad.

I was watching a Fons and Porter quilting show last weekend and they had a machine quilter on showing various techniques.

She used the chalk powder for stencils. The big difference was she didn't pounce the chalk.

She put a small amount of the powered chalk in a lid like one from a coffee can, she then dipped a foam brush in the chalk, wiped off the excess then proceeded to "paint" the chalk all over the stencil. The big advantage was the chalk powder was not flying all over the place.

She made her own stencils.

I've used the press n seal freezer paper. It comes off a lot easier and less picking of the stitches to remove all the press n seal.

If you make your own stencils use the painters blue painters tape to keep the stencil in place. It peels off a lot easier than regular masking tape.

Great! I'm so glad the PnS worked for you! Like you said...you now have a couple options. My free motion quilting improved 200% when I had the lines marked rather than trying to "draw" as I stitched. Even if you don't stay exactly on the line, it will wipe off later and no one will know.
