Coffee Mats or Mug Rugs

My favorite mug rug is the equilters pattern that Dee lists. I've made dozens of them!

The second one Dee lists is the one I was going to suggest. There is nothing sacred about the dimensions of the squares -- use the size you want, or the size of the scrap squares you have on hand. Another variation is to stitch in a circle or round the corners when stitching and trim before turning; then you save the hassle of trimming the corners. Thanks for the warm welcome! I enjoy any type of sewing & embroidery. I've sewn all my life it seems like. Taught for Stretch & Sew back wen---, but mainly self taught until I got the machine embroidery bug about 9 years ago. I've made some quilts for family members. They certainy wouldn't win any awards but the recipients think that theirs is the best. I usually make all the Christmas gifts so I'm always looking for something a little unusual that is appreciated. With the Granddaughters being teenagers & young Mom living in another state, making clothes for them is out of the question. I try to keep some extra little gifts on hand to sell to supplement my SS check. You know how that goes. I'm thinking the Mug Mats would be nice as sets & would be fun to make. Someone sent me a url to MooseBstitchin.com that has some Coasters/Mug Mats that gave me some good ideas also. I do sew almost every day so I'm not on the computer except for a couple of hours a day. I cut up my practice free-motion quilting pieces to use as mug mats in my sewing room and at my computer desk. I cut them into 3.75" - 4" or so squares and then trim off the corners so they are sort of octagonal. I do not finish the edges. Mine wouldn't be very nice to use as gifts, but you could plan your future practice pieces accordingly.
