ran across this one today. simple and quick to make. good use of scraps. excellent for anyone who sits up in bed while reading, watching tv or doing the daily crossword. :) might be cute as a shoulder cover with a matching lap quilt. just thunk'n outloud here, j.

That looks like a great Christmas gift idea for some of our DMIL or other elderly relatives and friends. Made in manly colours it would also do for gentlemen. Thanks Jeanne, Elly in Scotland

That's neat.

I think I would be tempted to use a 16" square and two 16" by 32-ish" rectangles of each fabric to eliminate the seam that would otherwise lie down the wearer's spine. I know feeling that would irritate me no end if I leant back against it.

You could also use a contrasting fabric for the square.

I think you have just solved my "what to give my dad for the holidays" dilemma. Thanks for that!

But I wonder if you really need to do that first seaming of the strips, since you are just going to cut off the end like that?

Hi Ginger, i think the variations are endless with that basic idea. tis just an open poncho really, or a cross between a poncho/shawl/scarf. lined or not, batting or not, any fabrics, any colours, any blocks... loops/buttons to close the front when/if ya want to. now i'm think'n how to add a collar to it, hmmmmm. have fun and do put up pix when finished. j.

hi Lizzy, there are heaps of ways to vary the basic idea. its really just another way to do a poncho, albeit open rather than closed. i also thot maybe include a wee loop of fabric and a button somewhere to hold up one side so it drapes across your chest. i'm sure there'd be some neat way to do that so it looks like part of the design. hmmmm, thunk'n outloud here again....several buttons/loops? hmmmmm. like i said, just thunk'n again. j.

where ya been, Elly? you've been missing around here lately.

yup, thats just what i was thinking too. any fabrics, any colours, any designs, use up orphaned blocks, play with new blocks, do some applique. personalize each one or just generalize them. makes little difference as long as they keep someone warm, eh. i'm think'n something like thin pellon and lining, then quilt it of course, lol. j.

Here, there and everywhere :)) (that's a title to a song) I've been lurking alot and just dipping my toes in now and then >G< How you doing??

Now orfan blocks that's a great idea. My mum's always cold especially in winter as where she is she doesn't have central heating. (south Spain) Normally she doesn't need it except for a couple months and it never gets as cold as here. Anyway, a wee shawly thingy would be a great idea. I was thinking a light but warm wadding too. To give it extra warmability :) My mum is so hard to buy for. She always says not to bother as it costs so much to send but I can't not bother!! But do I make for her bedroom or her living room :)))) Ones blues and ones pinks. LOL. Elly

Love all the ideas in this thread. I'll be having outdoor playground duty for the first time in about three years. this could be just the thing to wear out there on chilly days. (Unfortunately there will also be a necessity for a winter coat on some days!)

Thanks, Jeanne.
