QI tea cozy

I have a half dozen or so unfinished Christmas projects in the works so figured the only sane thing to do was start some more. ~snort!~ I found this darling quilted kitty tea cozy pattern (FREE!) and I'm making two for Christmas gifts. One I'm doing in an orange batik for my friend who has an orange tabby. The other I'm doing in sort of a toasty brown, light weight ultra suede-ish (washable) material for a friend who has a cat of similar color who loves to eat thread snips in order to leave colorful, festive hairballs around her house. This fabric has been hiding in my stash for who knows how long. I just KNEW I'd find a use for it sooner or later.

My printer died so I took the link to Kinko's and had them printed it out and then enlarge it for me......totally worth the $4.75 and eliminate the hassle of free hand fiddling!

You really had me baffled there for a second, Val. I couldn't think of a kitty that had a taste for hot tea. DDIL's dachshunds are absolutely mad about root beer but hot tea? Not a chance. The tea cozy is wonderful, I know your friends will be so pleased. Polly

I actually started to make that last year for my sister...a big tea drinker...but after embroidering the cat design, I really couldn't figure out how to attach the cat's head to the body of the cozy without it hanging out or looking awkward. The directions I had weren't all that enlightening so I gave up ! If it had been for me I think I might have glued it !!! I think I still have the embroidered cat...just still not sure what to do with it !!! This kind of made me sad because last C.mas I knitted a triangle scarf for my sis to top a turtleneck, etc. I had bought the required merino wool and that came out a bit wonky --not good enough for a gift !!!! I had been very careful while knitting to make sure I didn't have any mistakes because it was for a gift but this year I'm buying gifts for her !!!....Mary /VT

I think I got my pattern in a magazine ..somehow I remember those one-inch squares imprinted over the pattern.

Thanks - have printed it out for Christmas 2008! I wondered why I had that 1" squared paper the other day when I came across it.

Now where did I come across it!

Before lining the cozy...... I quilted the cat body, made the head and used two pieces of back material instead of one, sewed a 1" seam to join them leaving the center open within about an inch on either side, that left a nice wide opening to sew right sides together, turn the head, press the edges. I embroidered the nose all the way through to attach it to the body, Quilted with the pearl cotton the eye lids, whiskers and along the bottom of the appliquéd ear triangles all the way through the body. I used a piece of interfacing on the batting when I stitching through from the head. The other hand quilting on the head I'd already finished before sewing through to the body. After attaching the head with the ears, nose and whisker quilting I then sewed the cozy lining up each side leaving about a 6" opening at center, sewed it with a 1/2" seam around the bottom of the cozy, turned it and whip stitched the lining closed at the inside top. The head is securely attached but still stands out a bit and all the visible lining seams are neat and tidy. One trick to make a nice whip stitched seam is to press the sewn seam open and press the opening as if it was stitched. You'll have a nice clean edge to join when you stitch it closed.
