Don't want to open another can of worms....

so this will be a simple question... with only a simple answer expected.

Did the 2011 Directory go out? If so, when? If not, is it still in the works or do we need to start anew.

Thanks

Don't think so.

Yes on new. Much of my info has changed

I didn't see one in 2011, and I was watching, because our computer crashed last December, and I lost mine!

No. Maybe new would be a good idea, except that there are relatively few who now read RCTQ in this system? If there are more on the Facebook group, perhaps it will have to be moved there? . In message , Kate in MI writes

As others have mentioned, no Directory this past year. But I'm also another that does not 'do' facebook. I'd be happy to help with the directory if needed. I know Alice was doing it in MS Access which I am reasonably familiar with if that helps. Let me know.

I 'thought' that you had to use your real identity to participate in FB. Not so. Yesterday, I read some foolishness about the Justice Dept. investigating people who lie about their identity (and weight) on FB so I reckon it could be done. =) Privacy is a Big Deal for me. Just is. Anyhow, our younger kith and kin are on there and frequently post pictures and I want to see too! I guess somebody will have to come drag me in. Reluctantly, of course . . . and in disguise. Polly

The user agreement (which you sign up to to open the account) says that you must "be you". But who's checking?

Except if you are somebody, and try to have a FB account, you might have a problem!

I'm pretty sure a gator could open an account. Personally, I'm friends with a dog and also at one time a guinea pig! I'd be honoured to add a gator to that list :-)

No, nor am I Ginger, under any circumstances; but I wondered if the Directory would be more applicable to the majority if it were organised there. I wouldn't be on it - nor would you, I guess! But I can live with that. Sorry if I misled you. . In message , Ginger in CA writes

Wow, Kim, what an offer. I am a computer ignoramus (relatively!) and could do nothing to help, so this is grand. . In message , AuntK writes

That was the reason I joined Facebook - so I could keep up on the pics being posted of the young'uns. Now I like to play some of the games, too!

I'm still not crazy about it - about the time I start feeling comfortable with using it, they change it. I don't have anything against change, but when change doesn't appear to make something better, why bother?

And you can always use first name followed by some abbreviation of last name - if your first name is common, no one is likely to pick you out of a search.

Do it the other way round if your last name is the more common one.

In any case, the important thing is to keep settings as private as practically possible (for me that generally means "friends only" or "no").

I have been looking out for the directory all year (I read here every day) and it hasn't appeared.

Although there are over 120 members of RCTQ's facebook page, there are really only about 6 or so who regularly post, and then it is usually after someone has posted a quilt picture - not the more discussion based conversations we have here. It definitely hasn't taken over from this method of communicating, and really its just as easy to go to someone's Webshots or Flika page to see piccies if a link is posted.

There are a few who used to be here - like Jeanne, and its good to see their names again, but really I can see no advantage in using it - I find it definitely second best.

I know some people were having trouble reading here, but I use Mozilla Thunderbird and have had no problems at all.

Thanks for this, Sally. I had the impression that it (Facebook) was packed with frequently chatting exiles. . In message , Sally Swindells writes

I've been following this group for over ten years, am not in the directory nor am I moving to facebook. I bet that there are lots more people in the same rank. I love what I read here. Thanks to all for the instructions and hints I have picked up.

Polly, i use my first name on facebook with last name as aka-nzlstar. never have put my real last name on there. it accepts whatever first and last name you tell it, unless it is rude perhaps. some people change their first and last names when they fancy and it is accepted within some parameters that facebook as set up for itself. i dont fully understand that but using your name as it is would be perfectly acceptable. i use my @yahoo email addy but i've set that so it doesnt show to anyone anyhow. that is just for facebook to advise me of whatever if it is ever needed. so far i've not had any emails from them about anything. seems safe to me if you fix your settings on there properly.

all that said, i dont see any reason to not continue on here. this is more of an open format for the rest of the world at large to read. facebook group you have to be accepted or added to the group by someone. i guess in that respect it might be considered safer. we can post pix on there and i do like the 'like' button we can click when we dont have anything specific to say but do agree with what someone else said on whatever the subject was...if that makes any sense. we also have the group chat that is instant but just within the group and also you have facebook chat of those you add as your friends on there. those of us who use facebook understand what i'm rambling on about. i hope it makes sense to those who dont yet use facebook. chat can be handy to discuss something much like a phone call but with whoever happens to be online at the time, rather than waiting for responses, tho that can be done too.

hi Sally, i am here but not much to add most of the time so i just read stuff. occasionally i've emailed someone privately about something going on here. i'm still having my own issues with the world. my kids are both on facebook but neither of them post much. enough to keep track of them tho. son is in ireland now after travelling across SE Asia since early May. not sure when we'll see him again. they got working permits for Ireland as she has family there that they are staying with. he is hoping to get some work in his chosen industry there if possible, for the experience there and to top up his travelling money too. j.

I really only joined Facebook so I could see my children's activities - eg DD posts her running training times there.

I'm on facebook and a member of the RCTQ group over there, but I almost never follow any RCTQ discussions there. This is where I come for my RCTQ "fix".
