Another means of contact....

While I absolutely do not want to entice members to leave the usenet group, it appears that all of a sudden the RCTQ Facebook is very active.

We invite you -- if you are an active Facebook poster -- to come visit with us there.... as well as here. I know many members have had difficulty accessing usenet groups in the past couple of years. Facebook is easy to navigate and if you avoid games and the other "stuff" there -- is a very nice way to communicate with friends and family.

So I hope we will see you here... and there!

I have never cared much for Facebook- maybe it's my settings. But I guess I need to ask.... how does a quilter find rctq on Facebook?

I've been on rctq since the early 90s. This is a sad, sad, day. :-(

Nup. I am not comfortable with privacy/user issues with Facebook. Not going there. RCTQ is perfect. Ok, I am a dinosaur even if I am very computer savvy Maybe next century.

I'm not comfortable with Facebook (and other such social network places) either, Bronnie. I don't even consider it dinosaur-like: simply my choice. I have no intention of changing, and make no apology for that. Much of my life has been spent in a small group 'swimming against the tide'. . In message , Bronnie writes

Although I am on Facebook, there is something special about the usenet group and I prefer to post here.

I use both. They are different, for different levels of contact imo.

FB is for quick exchanges; this forum is for considered responses. I wouldn't have asked my question about QAYG on FB, but I might put in a progress update and 'like' someone's new gadget there. They can co- exist quite happily, I think. And the last 'conversation' was ways to get back here! :)

So it has its uses. So has this community. It depends, I suppose, if you are after a cup of coffee and a chat, or pulling up a chair to join in a bee.

OK so I can't find you on Facebook - RCTQ doesn't come up with anything. What should I be searching for?

Me, three, Pat S. I like my privacy and don't visit social networking sites of any kind.

Swimming against the tide is something I have done for a long time.

When problems became apparent about security and privacy issues on Facebook I deleted myself from Facebook and have not visited it since. Unless and until those problems are satisfactorily addressed, I will not return.

I am rather defensive about our identity and privacy. In fact, when the phone rings and I don't recognize the number, I answer, "Bubba's Drive-In". Family and friends thinks it's a hoot and the unknown creeps simply hang up. Polly

I like FB for pictures...but the newsgroup is so much better for following the threads of a "conversation". I'll keep posting here - well, more reading than posting right now - but you get the idea :)

Take care all,

I don't post a lot here, but if the group moved entirely to FB I would drop out. I too am concerned with security issues, even using a throw away email. We've had to clean my DS's computer of viruses and change his email a number of times, unfortunately all of his friends use FB so we can't really outlaw it, but I've segregated his computer from the rest, network speaking so it won't affect the rest of us.

I have all my FB settings set to "friends only". And some things are also blocked for friends that I don't know well. But somehow the FB page for rctq feels more exposed than here at the newsgroup, even though the latter is probably more open to the world (at least as far as I'm concerned). Maybe because it takes a lot more effort to find us here in this corner of cyberspace. Allison

This seems like a good thread for my current burning question - how in the world can I find a Mac-compatible newsgroup reader?? I really strongly dislike reading through google.

If you google "Mac-compatible newsgroup reader" a whole bunch of links come up. I can't comment on any of them because I'm on a pc but hopefully one will work for you. Good luck! Allison

Mary, i'm presuming you use your home isp email addy on here(as below) without worrying about privacy issues. i rarely use my home email addy anymore. i got an @yahoo and use that everywhere there maybe any privacy issues that come up...which is pretty much everywhere. :) there are my generic email addys you could get...gmail, yahoo, hotmail, etc. j.
