Though I don't post often I agree that following conversation is much easier in the newsgroup. I like fb for keeping up with family and friends, sharing pictures, playing games.

Karen,

I'm using a shareware program called Hogwasher. I can't claim to love it, but it works. I think I downloaded it from the Apple's download's page.

I don't quite get the worry and paranoia associated with Facebook and the like. It only gets as much information as YOU give it! If you don't want ti to know your phone number, don't enter it. If you don't want it to know your birthday, don't tell it! While I am not advocating abandoning the group, there are many people here who don't post anymore because it has become too difficult. I personally don't see the big deal about using google to read/reply to the group either, but then again I found the group on google and have been using it that way since day one. Join facebook, sign up with your user name instead of your real name, give it a yahoo/gmail/hotmail address and enjoy using it knowing that facebook doesn't know anything about you! I don't have time to do both and have been enjoying keeping up with old friends from here for quite some time now, but there are still a lot of people missing :)

Are the missing former RTCQ members posting on Facebook or are they quilting instead of reading and posting? I have resisted FB but might have to join as it seems to be the only way the 20/30 generation are communicating. My kids keep telling me to text but I keep reminding them that my old prepaid cell phone doesn't do those fancy things. No one under 35 seems to have a land line any more and even some of my generation are disconnecting their land lines. The world is changing.

I dislike the term you used 'paranoia'. I simply do not want to have anything to do with these social networking sites; my choice; not my paranoia. . In message , JPgirl writes

Marcella and Sandy - I can't seem to download a working copy of MT - NewsWatcher.

Maureen - after sixty days I have to pay for Hogwasher, is that what you did?

Howdy!

Thanks, Kate.

BTW, to those concerned about "privacy" - there's nothing private about RCTQ. It's an open, world-wide usenet newsgroup that ANYone, ANYwhere can log in to and read, read, read all about it. We used to remind each other of this lack of privacy when someone got a little to personal w/ details about ____ & ____. I remember a couple of gals who were hiding out from ex-husband/in-laws, yet posted here openly. And there have been more than a couple of secrets and addresses that showed up right here for all the world to see, when the poster(s) forgot that it is a PUBLIC forum.

Worried about FB? Why? Just how many identities are we trying to conceal?

Good luck, Karen.

I forgot to mention the Lurkers.

Right here on good ol' RCTQ - we've always had lurkers, and we don't even know who most of them are. Or why they lurk. ... 8->

At least on FB we can track "friends" thru' everyone's Friend list(s). Many of them will be "mutual" because we hang out w/ many of the same folks. ;->

R/S - only so many things I can worry about... and right now it's whether there's enough cocoa powder ...

Amen to that, too, Pat. It IS a choice. I'm on FB, but I choose not to respond to most of the things my kids post. Sometimes I just don't want to know. Every few months there's a flurry of old high school acquaintances who welcome someone new, they ask to be "friended", some do, some don't, and I find myself reading posts & thinking, "This person hasn't changed since primary school when we didn't like each other; do I really want them as a "friend" here?" One gal still hasn't received a reply to the lunch invitation she sent 2 months ago. She was mean 30 yrs ago; I don't do mean people. But, mostly, it's great to meet up again w/ long-ago buddies, friends, chums. Pictures, tho', are another matter....

Meanwhile, back at the ranch.. er.. rctq: I have met new friends here; when we meet, we realize how much in common we have & enjoy the real face-to-face time. On FB I've re-met friends & acquaintances. That's a major difference.

Cheers! R/Sandy - "I want my..." rctq

I use Thunderbird for email and newsgroups on my Mac. I think it has more to do with your ISP than the with the Mac. Ours still carries them, so whatever we use to read with works.

It's funny - I am probably less open to the world on FB because all my settings are set exclusively to friends but somehow I felt more exposed when posting on the rctq page there as compared to posting here on the newsgroup. Maybe it's because FB has links to the "rest" of my life...... family and non-quilting friends with pictures of all of them. And also because there are names I don't recognize there - I haven't learned everyones' alternate identities yet.
