My friends all thought I would go out & buy them, because I tend to be pretty organized. However, those puppies are about 1/8 - 1/4" thick - do you know how much more room they take up on your shelf? Multiply that by the number you would need & it cuts down quite a bit on your storage space. No - I would never buy them. I have my fabric all folded exactly the same way, so it's easy to see what I have on my shelf. My bigger pieces (2 yards or more) I have folded differently & I have them in a different storage space. Nope - not going to give up all that storage space. You can't make me & that's my final word on it!

Seems to me a person could do much the same thing with cardboard (the back-of-the-tablet weight) for a fraction of the cost, and wouldn't take up so much space. JMO

I couldn't find a cost on that page, but I know I can do the same thing with foam core board. Custom sizes can be had by anyone willing to measure and cut it.

The big down-side is that either version of "bolt boards" would take up my limited precious stash space. By folding without bolt boards I can store more fabric in less space. Debra in VA See my quilts at

That's what I was thinking......maybe even cardstock.

Not buying them here either!! Could buy more fabric with the money NOT spent on the fabric holders. If I want to look at it all neat, I'll go to the store (& buy more fabric while I'm there!)

I don't know if it would work for me or not but it surely does look pretty. I really like the idea. Polly

Howdy!

Often the fabric stores will give away those cardboard inserts from the bolts; many just put them in the trash anyway. One summer by kids gathered enough of them to build a fort in the dining room. Strange kids. Anyway, cutting that insert in half would give the same size as these store-bought models; a piece of masking tape will keep the fabric on there. However, I don't want my fabrics sitting out in the sunlight on shelves that way. I prefer to have them in the tubs (loosely sorted by color) in the dark, until I need them. So far, they do as I say. ;-D

There's that little thing about using acid-free paper products with fabric. I'd be leery of using plain ol' cardboard. But then I am with the others who wouldn't give up their storage space for the thickness of the cardboard or whatever. I stack my fabric horizontally on shelves about 7 in. apart- it's much easier than trying to pull a hunk of fabric out of a vertical stack.

Gosh, I just don't think I'd want to take the time to wrap every piece of fabric I have, around those cardboard thingys. Not to mention, the fabric would be exposed to light unless you rotated it all the time. Nah.... I'll just keep mine on the shelves in the closet. It really LOOKS pretty though!

I couldn't afford enough of the organizers to make a dent in my stash-- but I folded fabric around an 8-1/2x14" Fons and Porter ruler, pulled the ruler out and stacked the fabric flat on shelves. Here's some of the results:

I've looked at them. Decided that 1. they take up a lot of space that isn't fabric. and 2. the money could better be spent on fabric. I fold fabric and store it in (open top) banker's boxes, or plastic totes. (Put box or tote on end, lay folded fabric on end that is now "bottom". Easy to see it all, and to remove just what you want, if you don't pack the box/tote too full.)

great looking sewing room, Rusty. I've done something similar, though I haven't got a whole room for all my quilting stuff. What I did reminds me of the commercial where the parents said goodbye to their child and then rushed to off to have some fun. I rushed into the house and took over the now extra bedroom and have shelves in the closet, removing the hanging space entirely, and then stacked all my fabric by color and size.

Thanks for the pictures. I need to show them to my family so they can see that others have lots of fabric. Of course I still have more but they have never seen anyone with even as much as you.
