Good thoughts needed

Thanks, Amy -- good suggestions. I'll talk to DH as soon as he gets to the rehab center. :)

A few more thoughts from me, as my mom has been in a nursing home here in WI for a year and half now. We worked very hard to get her into a "good" one but it helps to be close to check in weekly. That seems to keep them on their toes. In our state, usually there is just one RN per unit and the rest of the attendants are LPN's and aides. There is also a Social Worker assigned to the home. I have found that going to the Social Worker helps in getting things done. The Ombudsman is usually a volunteer that reports back to the state Ombudsman on senior care. They are a good contact also. All the suggestions you've gotten here are good. Contact the attending Dr., the Social Worker, and the director of the home with complaints. The nasty aides who were making fun of your mom are probably minimum wage workers who need to be dismissed. BE VOCAL and be FIRM. Once they know you are expecting good care and complained once, they should be on their toes to do better! I wish all of you luck and healing thoughts to your dear mother. Donna

Call the toll-free number that should be posted in the hallways, and report these things. If it's not posted there, find it on the internet, and add to the list that the number is not posted in the hallways. Or - I don't know, now that I said all that. Maybe in that state it is different than here.

Thanks for that info Lyn - I'll pass it on to Mom tonight when we talk, as she's the one who's going to be most involved. I'd love it if we could move him in with us, but at this point some of his needs are beyond our capabilities - and some of the help he needs are with things I'm sure he wouldn't want his granddaughter doing for him!

Keeping your MIL, DH, DH's sister, and you all in my thoughts. If the night staff is truly that bad, your DH might consider speaking to their supervisor. So hoping that things will get better.

Thanks, Michelle. So far DH's sister, DH, and our two DDs have all spoken to the administrator. Yesterday MIL seemed much better, so we're hoping things have been "adjusted" at the rehab center. She's walking -- slowly, of course -- on her new knee, so perhaps she'll come through this okay, after all. :)

Glad to hear the administrator was told about the problem from all 4 of your MIL's relatives who are there. One person's complaint can be dismissed with rationalizations; it's much harder to ignore 4.

Great that your MIL is up and around. That sounds like good progress. Keep us posted!

Thanks, Michelle! DH is now home from being with his mom for a few days, and he'll go back on Tuesday. Then he's taking her to her home and staying for a couple of days before going fishing in Mexico, then staying with her again. She's doing so much better now! :)

thank goodness she will be going back to her own home soon. i just quickly relayed the story to my dh and he said, ya better be careful where ya put people. we've had to deal with three lots of nursing homes in the past and it wasnt fun when things were not as they should be. how is it so hard for anyone to understand that if they are lucky they will be old one day and need the help of their fellowman. it amazes me how anyone could be so cruel and heartless. send her lots of hugz from RCTQ please. j.

Thanks, Jeanne. MIL is very glad to be going home soon, but she says everyone is being *extra* nice to her these days. Of course, she's a tough old bird and knows how to go out of her way to make friends, so that helps. But it will be a relief to get her home!
