Guild Last Night

I don't think I've ever written a review of a guild meeting for this group before. But we had such an interesting speaker that I had to share. Her name is Sandy Turner and she is from Santa Maria, CA.

I had really, really, really wanted to skip the meeting because I have been too busy and wanted the time at home. But...I had to be there to do some things...so I went but not enthusiastically.

When I walked in, she and her husband were setting up quilts around the room and I quickly changed my mind!

The topic was on using unusual fabrics in quilts. She showed us so many different ways of using pictoral fabrics - those big fish prints and giant florals and bears and horses and such. It was awesome. And, she set up a flannel board on an easel. Then she gave us a packet of pattern sheets and went through how to make the different blocks and showed us samples of the blocks going together and different layouts on the flannel board. It was great.

I know some ladies here will be horrified, and others giggle with glee, but the best place for her to find those big prints is....... Walmart! So there you go, a nationally known quilter who has shopped for fabric at Walmart. :-)

She brought TONS of quilts and not a single slide! I know this is increasingly difficult for traveling lecturers who fly because of weight limits on luggage and because they cannot lock their suitcases anymore and fear theft. So, if you are a guild in a driveable distance for your speaker you will likely see more quilts and fewer slides.

A very fun and inspiring speaker that you may want to consider for your own guild!

Glad you enjoyed your meeting. What are you going to make because of it? Ragmop/Sandy--who doesn't care at all if someone gets fabric from WallyWorld, just glad it no longer occurs to me ;-D

We once had a speaker who gave us a slide show, then proceded to turn up the lights and show us most of the quilts again in person. Huh? I don't have a clue why we had to sit in the dark and peer around those in front of us to get a look at a tiny quilt on the screen when she had them there with her. Go figure!
