A good guild program

In January and February, our guild hesitates to book a speaker who has to travel any distance due to the fact the weather can quickly change well our laid plans. So after reading an article in a quilt magazine I suggested "First Quilt, Last Quilt" as our program for January. (I'm on the program committee.) I was worried that only a few members would remember to bring their quilts, but I was very pleasantly surprised!! We had about an hour and a half of stories, smiles and outright laughter! I had those who brought quilts sign up when they came in and then just called them off two at a time during the program. When we do our "show and tell" we usually have quite a line of participants and they often can't see the quilts very well. This worked out great! Some of those first quilts were a real hoot....and so were the stories. "I thought quilts had to be made of old clothes, so I went into my closet and started cutting." :-)

For our January program, we did a "5 Quilters, 5 Quilts" program. Five members volunteered to each bring 5 of their quilts and tell a little about their quilting history. It was suggested that each one include their first quilt, or at least an early quilt. We did this last year, too, with different members. The program was well received both years.

We do a Lotto block each month. A block pattern (usually a very simple one) is published in the newsletter. Any member that wishes can make one or more blocks in the designated pattern. Members who make blocks have their name entered in a drawing; during the meeting, a name is drawn and that person wins all the blocks. For one program recently, members were asked to bring the quilts they had made from Lotto blocks that they had one. It was interesting to see the various ways people had handled odd numbers of blocks.

Our guild used to do something similar to the lotto. But it evolved into the blocks being donated to the service committee. I really like the idea of "5 Quilters" and will take it to the next program committee. Maybe we'll wait a year or so before trying it, but it's a neat idea....and cheap!!! We used to do a "quilter of the month" where we had a member bring several of her quilts and give a short "tour". But this was in addition to the program. Oh! Something else we did that was VERY well received!! A friend and I were at another guild's meeting and during show and tell their members were bringing up smallish quilts to show, then giving them to one of their officers. Afterwards, we asked about that. They were making place mats to be delivered with Meals on Wheels. I thought that was cool so I suggested it to our service committee. It was announced last night that they delivered 175 placemats with the Christmas dinners and the clients were just thrilled!! One lady didn't want the delivery person to leave because she wanted to talk about her new mat.....a bit sad, but still a great addition to the meal. Isn't that cool? Not my idea....thanks Des Moines Guild!

We did something similar.... My first quilt.... my favorite quilt... Like your experience... the stories were such fun!

Coming up with good program ideas can sometimes be a challenge... especially on a very tight budget. It feels good when one is a real hit!

Congratulations!!!

We have done similar things, but added the challenge first of asking other guild members to try and figure out which person the quilts may have been from. We gave a prize for the one with the most correct answers. We also have our block of the month quilt display at our holiday meeting in December. Everyone who has won blocks at any time can bring a completed quilt and then we have a viewers choice, with awards given to 1st-5th place. It is a way to encourage people to actually finish their quilts from all those blocks, and it's always fun to see what settings people come up with.
