Pami ! Been wondering how you were doing? Haven't "heard" your voice in here for awhile. Merry Christmas to you! We have enough snow of our own.

Pami,

Happy Holidays to you as well. Thanks anyway about the snow. We now have plenty here in Mass. 10" or more this afternoon :-(

Same back to you, Pami.

We have snow layered with ice layered with more snow and then more ice. Or maybe it was the other way around. Regardless, you can keep your snow out there! And it doesn't sound like it's going to warm up in the near future, so we may actually have a white Christmas!

And we are supposed to have snow, sleet and freezing rain tonight and tomorrow (what's the difference in sleet, ice storms and freezing rain??? It's all awful, icky, cold dangerous stuff!).... so I'll pass on your very generous offer to send me some snow! LOL

Happy Holidays to you and yours, too!

i think everyone should act like a bird and fly south for the winter. down here it is summer, warm soft sea breeze and sunshine abounds. imagine spending xmas day on a hot sandy beach in the south pacific under the gently swaying palm trees with a cold beer or frozen daiquiri or whatever you fancy and of course a nice big slice of pavlova dripping with big fat juicy strawberrys and kiwifruit and lashings of real fresh whipped cream. i do not mean that stuff from a can or the stuff i saw on the supermarket shelves in usa that has things in it to make it last longer on the shelves but real unadulterated cream. i'll try to save ya each a nice big slice. ahhhhhhhhhhh, summer!!!!!!!!!!! :)) j.

keep a close eye on the exchange rate. back in early 2001 you got NZ$2.50 for US$1. back then we had single moms on a benefit flying from usa to nz for their holiday and the average nz'r couldnt afford to take a holiday locally. it was insane. now the exchange rate is closer to NZ$1.30 for US$1. not nearly as good for those coming south now. better for us going north tho so lots of folks are now getting a chance to see the world. with no common borders we gotta fly to see any of the world. tho some adventurous kiwis have been known to try surfing across the pacific. :)) xmas in the summer is a totally different experience for sure. lazing on a summer afternoon in the south pacific, j.

Not my idea of Christmas at all. If I had to live there, I'd fly north for snow--you can keep your hot Christmas!! Give me lots of snow, which we really never get here. Gen

Are you baking lots of cookies, Pami?

Wrap up in your quilts and enjoy the snow.

Howdy!

I'm with you, Gen! ;-)

Have had both warm holidays & cold ones, and a few in-between temps. I'll take the cooler/cold ones, thanks. Either way, we got quilts! ;-D

Merry Christmas!

R/Sandy-- w/ no family in south Texas anymore (thank god) "they don't call it The Tropics of Texas for nothing!" "Florida has nothing on south Texas for tropical weather"

p.s. the neighbors are having a Holiday Yard Cleaning or something; it's chilly, wet & foggy here: they're mowing?!!!?

Pami, you can keep your snow and don't send any of it north this weekend Just got finished shovelling 5" (now have a foot on the ground) with a Nor'Easter enroute for Sunday. We'll have a White Christmas! (Then it can melt!)

hey, Gen, you want snow, we got snow here...it all year round in the southern alps, just keep south flying past auckland for another 800km or so and you'll find it. :) might even be some on our north island active volcano all year round tho not enough to satisfy those who really need it at xmas. xmas in summer is just a different way of seeing life and the world. tho i must admit i prefer shopping in winter weather to summer weather. just too damn hot then for all that nonsense. :)) yep, we sure do have snow in the south pacific. our length runs approx from longitude 34 south to 46 south...quite a long distance for a little country. auckland is at about 36 South, fwiw. the longitude in the southern alps is as far south of the equator as ottawa, canada is north of the equator or thereabouts...about 45 either N or S. columbus, ohio is

39.58 North. :) this site shows all the longitude and latitude for the world if anyone wants to check their own locale.

yet again, i ramble on and on. i did have fun looking at that site tho. i get carried away with it.i'm about the same distance south of the equator now as i was raised north of the equator and on the same ocean too. its like waving to all my old friends up there across the water. :) cheers, j.

we have xmas trees just like we did in usa. tho there is a native tree here called the pohutukawa that blooms around xmas with lovely red flowers, kin to bottle brush i think but much much prettier when they are all in bloom along a street. this is called the nz xmas tree.

bout the long link but i'm not gonna use tinyurl around here for the timebeing. :)those google image results show lots of good pix in variety of settings. it really is fantastic when all the trees are in full bloom at one time around town.

we always have had a fresh cut tree but keeping it fresh enough is fun and games. our tree stand has a big bucket of water under it. we recut it when we get it home and plunge it straight into a bucket of fresh water overnight, then bring it inside and into the stand/bucket of water. that water is checked daily and topped up as needed. its not too bad actually. the temps here probly not much different to temps some folks keep their homes heated in winter there where it is really really snowy and cold. tho never having lived myself where it does snow in winter or gets really really cold i'm just guessing. i've been thru a winter where there is snow and it is cold but not in my own home so not sure how warm i'd have it. here we dont have central heating or air conditioning....unless you count opening and closing all the doors and windows in the house as the temps call for, lol. all that said, we do have snow in the southern alps in the south island and snow on our active volcano in the middle of the north island(i live up this way but not near the volcano). iirc there is still snow on the alps down south right thru the summer so if your hell bent on snow at xmas here it is available but ya gotta go to the snow. it wont come to you. we dont get snow here in auckland, sea level and we are set on an isthmus between two big harbours so no hope of snow even in winter. :)) the worst part of xmas weather here in auckland is if it is hot and the humidity reaches over 95% so drizzling. sends everyone inside out of the drizzle but still hot so all the doors and windows are open and we're all inside hot and trying to look happy as we shovel down the traditional hot xmas dinner. now that has always seemed odd to me but as i arrived here as the newcomer/outsider i just took what i was given for dinner and its never changed. i keep trying to get dh to go for cold meats and only salads but he insists we do it like his mum did it. hot leg of pork or lamb, roast vegetables, xmas pudding with brandy sauce, pavlova with strawberrys and lashings of whipped cream and trifle of course, we can not forget the trifle, lol. argh, now i'm full just thinking about it. we're doing ds and his g/f here tomorrow for xmas lunch early for them as they leave on the 20th for the philippines for 3 weeks. :( it wont be the same without everyone here on the day but they've made their plans already. gonna be mighty quiet around here on the day, only me, dh, dd and her b/f and ds and the cat who'll run and hide thru the whole day. so tho it is different in the south pacific for xmas weather from up north, we can give ya snow if you really came down south at that time for the snow. best time for snow here is in the winter tho. then there really is skiing down the side of an active volcano in the morning and you can drive a ways and swim in the pacific ocean...well if you're one of those crazy enough to like swimming in the ocean in the winter..some do,i dont. ewwwwwww too bloody cold for me. again, i run off on a tangent and give ya more info than anyone needs or wants. sorry bout taht. cheers, j.
