Hi everyone! Help! I need opinions! Does anyone have a copy of the book 'Taking the Math Out of Patchwork' by Judy Martin and Bonnie Lehman? If so, do you highly recommend it for beginners? Do any current book(s) cover all of the topics addressed in the book? Here's the short version of why I am asking. I am one of our quilt guild librarians. I was recently in a discussion with a guild member about library holdings and the need for beginner/technique/reference related items in our holdings. The subject book has come up more that once in conversation but since I have never seen it before, I would like some feedback from others who have. I could buy it online, but since it is out of print it is expensive and I am very hesitant to commit our very limited library funds to this without full confidence that this is a prudent purchase. If other books currently in print address the same topics, then we would be better off going the least expensive route. Since our guild begins the new year next month, I wanted to get some feedback before I get too far ahead on this search. I look forward to hearing from you all! Thanks in advance! DeNise: Wow, you've been quiet lately ... good to see ya again. YES, I have that Lehman/Martin Math Book and YES, I recommend it highly for beginners and all other quilters! How about sending e-mail note to Judy Martin and ask if she has any in her stock? Let's see if I can find her URL ..... NAYY.

Okay, I just went there and that Math Book is NOT listed. Still, it wouldn't hurt to ask. Judy does list a "Complete Rotary Cutting Reference." I have that one and just checked it. That is also a very nice resource, but the subject is not the same as the Math Book.

There's also a book called "Patchwork Minus Mathwork" by Linda Causee, published by American School of Needlework, 2000. It is "A Quilter's Guide to Planning and Buying Fabric Without a Degree in Mathematics." It addresses planning your quilt, how many squares/triangles/whatever you can per yard, etc. It's a great resource.
In terms of blocks, I really like "Around the Block with Judy Hopkins" which has 200 rotary-cut blocks in 6 sizes. It is great when you need a block for a swap, etc. in a specific size, as well as for general patchwork.
For this former English-major, anything that helps with math is invaluable!

Hi there.. .Yes, I have this book, I love it and refer to it fairly often... It is the one book I never misplace.. I keep it in my quilters tote... It has sooo much to offer... NAYY... for instance.. if you want to make a twin size quilt and know you are doing it with 6" blocks and know how many blocks you need, you can look up a chart and it tells you how much fabric to buy. Try "Patchwork Minus Mathwork". Not sure of the authors, but I think it cover about the same stuff and is currently available.
