hugs

Hello quilt lovers.. I am a lurker in this NG and i am getting out of lurk mode because i feel the need to say this.. This ((Hug)) thinghy you got going on here , where you all make blocks and put it in to a quilt that will be send to someone that you feel needs to be comforted is the most wonderfull thing i read in years..not only the recieving of the quilt but that what it stands for is what people need , the knowing ppl are thinking of you , are actually putting time in making a block and send you something you can wrap yourself in when you need warmth, support and a good cry.. Wonderful !! Who ever thought of that idea has a big loving heart.. keep up the good work ladies !

FiederEls from the Netherlands going back in lurk mode.

Do join in, and become part of the Hug 'system'. It is a great idea, you're right. I had never heard of anything like it until I 'came' here. It is not a demanding system. You only make a block when you can or want to do so. I've been privileged to put one together - it is a wonderful experience. If you don't want to 'de-lurk', that's just fine, too. Keep on enjoying the reading >g< It's nice to hear from you today, anyway. . In message , FiederEls writes

Welcome! And you're right, hugs are great. But it's also just fun to make blocks, knowing somebody will appreciate them, without the commitment of making a whole quilt! So I really enjoy being on the hug list and helping when I have time. Roberta in D

I think this has been a process since the beginning of quilting time. I remember talks between women about this block making for "friendship" quilts from the time I was a little girl. I have read about the process in many - many books. The "HUG" is just a moniker we hung on the friendship quilt a few years back because a nothing gives a hug like a quilt.

Because i am a handquilter.. don't even own a sewingmachine.. i like to design and make my own quilts by hand but it takes me months to finish a quilt , so i don't have much to contribute to this group , i just enjoy the posts and the quilt pictures. i get inspired by all of you.. thats why..

The number of quilts you make is completely unimportant on this group! Some folks make more than others, this will always been true. The value of a group like this is the ability to share ideas and inspriations. Perhaps one of your quilts would inspire someone to use similiar colors. Months to finish a quilt? Dear, sometimes it takes me years! Even with machine sewing and quilting! Heck, there's some I've never finished....

Don't hide. Come play. Talk about what you are working on. Where do you get your designs for handquilting? What style of quilts do you like to make? Where exactly is your stash stored?

Well.. i did make a barcello ( if thats the right name) quilt ,( yes , pieced the whole darn thing by hand) from a pattern.. my other quilts i designed myself..just by looking at old buildings or those beautiful cast-iron fences puts ideas in my head and there is no limit to my fantasy.. lol i put my ideas on paper and start to think of patterns and colors and thats all i think about .. it's a bit like giving birth.. I made a quilt that was pieced together in a floral theme and quilted but also used beads and gold thread , well i guess you should have seen it in order to like it.. lol It was snatched from my wall by my daughter and she took it to her place because quote , it looked so much more at home on her wall , unquote .. anyway.. thats what i do... and my stash?? i don't have a stash actually...honestly.. no no no.. don't look in the cabinet in the little room .. it really isn't there.. i tell you.. why my nose is growing you ask???

I have made three {{{HUG Quilts}}} now and Little Mike's will be my fourth. If you really feel the desire to contribute to HUG quilts, do so by all means :-)! I had hand pieced blocks for the first three HUGS so don't feel you can't contribute because you hand piece :-)! If the time involved is the reason for not sending blocks, we understand -- that's the beauty of a HUG -- you only contribute when you can. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Oh this sounds fascinating. I, too, design my own quilts almost exclusively; and I am terribly slow, even though I use a machine for virtually everything. I do hand appliqué, and I sew down the binding by hand! I have also done English paper piecing (also needs to be done by hand). Most of us do at least some by hand. Have you hear of the wonderful American quilter Jinny Beyer? She does her work by hand and it is exquisite. Try a look at her website. I have made a bargello quilt, too - but by machine.

I agree with Wendy, some of our reluctant machiners might well be inspired by your work. Is it Mary Ann (pajaritaflora) who does everything by hand? I think your niche here is developing very nicely >g< . In message , FiederEls writes

Only months? Some people sew by machine and still take months or even years to finish! This is no excuse for not joining in :-) Roberta in D
