I need a fabric detective

I am trying to find some fabric that changes shad across it's width. Does it exist? I need some that goes from very pale yellow to a middling yellow . I have seen some that changes colour but not any that changes shades of the same colour. Clues would be gratefully accepted. I know that the collective knowledge of this group is fantastic, but maybe I'm chasing a dream? Ruth Sydney

Ruth, I think Moda Ombres is the line that does that.

How just S-u-p-e-r, Ruth. I get to impress you with my brilliance in mostly useless trivia. The magic word for your search is 'ombre'. There are only two of them here, one black/white and one bit left in teal but they are very helpful in piecing. Go see what you can find; ought to be fun. Polly (Well. SpellCheck says that isn't even a word. I know it's not umber or hombre.)

There are marble ombres from Moda. Most of the online shops I looked at didn't show very good pictures but here's a pretty good pic of what it looks like on eBay.

Yes it does exist - I have two sorts:

1) is Makower called 780 Ombre Texture

I have a yellow one - goes from pale yellow to quite a strong gold. I tried Googling it and there are places in the US who carry it - also on Ebay. Remember if you order from the UK it will be twice the price you are used to paying!

2) is plain from Woodrow Studio, but the colour changes are not as subtle as the Makower - I don't know the name for this though - the selvedge just says Woodrow Studio for the Quilters Guild of the British Isles, 25th Anniversary 2004.

I can recommend the Makower one though - I have it in yellow, gold, green, two blues and grey, oh and red too. I think I like it!

I also have a Makower one from their Beside the Seaside range, but that only comes in blue - it has bits of white in it, like sea

The fabric you want is definately an ombre and Makower makes some lovely ombres in a somewhat watercolor brushed look....there is a little white in them here and there...nothing glaring mind you. they make a wide spectrum including two yellows. If I can help you further...let me know. I have a fabric shop..and I carry these fabrics...but I am not here to promote myself. Just thought that might help. Good luck! andrea

Ooh Sally! I wasn't asking, but aren't those Makower ones gorgeous. Where do you get yours from? I think our Worcester shop has lots of Makower fabrics, but I can't have seen this one anywhere or I would have snapped some up - intended project or no!! If your supplier is coming to Malvern, I could order them in advance and pick them up at the show. TIA . In message , Sally Swindells writes

Benartex makes one in their Gradations series, although it changes from edge to middle and back to edge again (ie. lightest in the middle and darkest at the edges). The all yellow one is called corn cream. I haven't seen it in person, only online, but you may be able to find it at your LQS or whoever you normally shop from. I'm sure there are others out there, this is just the one I happened to find. NAYY, etc. :)

at a show - they were going like hot cakes! In fact I just missed out on one of the colours. I looked on their web site but that fabric wasn't there, but then they can't put everything in the shop on.

I also looked at which shows they were going to, but no info. They do do shows though.

Makower have a list of their stockists on their site under 'Links' - you might find that helpful.

I'm finding it really useful - you know a different shade from the same piece will tone in well.

Thank you all very much for your help. I have to thank John also for the fabulous link he sent. There are some wonderful things on there. Very dangerous the Waves collection is to die for.And the fan of colour is gobswaggling..

shall have to hide this one from my husband. The marble ombre is beaut but I need a plan one more in the style of the one Sally sent that looked more like brush strokes, and the 780Q is very close but seems to be beige rather than yellow. I tried a website for Woodrow Studio but couldn't get far.It is a little difficult to appreciate the colours on screen, which is another problem. And yes, Sally, I do realise that the prices in UK are not what we are used to here. I have already got a list from my sister for about six lots of fabric she wants me to bring for her. She doesn't have a computer so I have to scan it print and send the picture by airmail to her and she rings and gives me the okay. I hope to have some room for my clothing. Thanks again to you all, I knew there would be a few links to go through and, maybe hidden in one of them is just what I need. Maybe I could soak a darker one and get some of the colour to run out? Thankyou, you wonderful ones. Ruth, Sydney
