Indignant!!! Whine!!!

I just about had a fit the other day. Went to the local WallyWorld. THey have been remodeling the store for what seems like FOR FREAKIN' EVER, and the place is a huge mess. I mean huge. The employees don't even know where stuff is. But I digress. Sort of.... Went by the fabric section, which now consists of ONE RACK of maybe 40 - 50 bolts of fabric, if that. ONE rack. I figured they just didn't have it all set up yet. So I found a piece I wanted, and waiting to have it cut, I say to the cutter, "So where's all the fabric?" She goes, "That IS all the fabric." I say, "You're kidding. That's ridiculous!" She said, "All I can tell you is,

1-800-Wal-Mart."

They've all but eliminated the fabric department! This wouldn't be a tragedy if I lived in, say, Las Vegas, where it seems as though there is a fabric store on every corner, but on this end of Greensboro, NC (the money end, I might add...not that I have money, but I have neighbors who do...) there are two choices if you want fabric: WallyWorld and the LQS (Randy's). Randy's is great, but as with all LQS, high-end $, and he carries no garment fabrics. OTOH, he has all the batiks in the city; I don't think any other store carries more than about 4 bolts of batik. But, now that WallyWorld is cutting out the fabric department (no pun intended), Randy's will be the only choice. We need another good fabric store on this side of town. TSWLTH and Hancocks are both on the other side of town, which means 20 min + driving and idiotic traffic. Blech.

I'm with you. Our local WallyWorld still carries fabric (as of last visit, two weeks ago) but who knows? And my absolute favorite quilt shop is, as you say, more than half an hour away through Tucson traffic. Gives me the cold grues every time I think about driving over there.

Thanks for letting me whine in harmony.

I don't even have a quilt shop unless I drive 45 miles!! I don't have a local Wally either, but one is about 20 minutes away. They did the big remodel and finished about 2 months ago. Same thing!! One very short aisle of fabric. So sad. Guess I'll be doing a lot more online ordering, but it's just not the same. I neeeed to feel fabric, I just need to. BJ in GA

WalMart also tried selling pre-packaged fabric lengths, but that wasn't successful either. When the WalMart store opened in Kingston, they had so much loss from the fabric department, they put those security tags on every length of fabric, then had to remove them at check-out. They left huge holes in the fabric, so I stopped buying at out local store!

Howdy!

LOL! Lisa-- a 20 minute drive?!!? Imagine! LOL

Okay, I'm teasing: 20 minutes is standard here for a trip to the closest library, bank, grocery store, post office (round trip to p.o.). Living 'midst 3 million people, EVERYthing is at least 20 minutes away! When my mom lived in s.Tx. she used to talk about having to go "All the Way to Harlingen!" to do some shopping; Harlingen was 5 miles,

10 minutes from her house. It's all relative. Traffic? Traffic?!!? Freaking crazy people who don't know that red means stop and a yield sign means "Hey, you, buddy, wait your turn!" I mean, c'mon, who doesn't like having a 3-ton SUV riding the back bumper, close enough to see what brand of coffee cup they're holding and which brand of mobile phone they're chatting into? *snark*

As one who never shops at Wallyworld (because I don't have to and I deeply dislike their corp.) I go to Joann's and Hancock's which are 20-30 minutes away. Joann's is combining the 2 local shops into a bigger, new facility up along I-20; a clean store, at last! Shopping on-line has netted me some good sales, including batik-types, and lots more variety. LQSes have sales bins, too. My Cruiser loves road trips, so shopping for fabric is never a problem. Check w/ some local RCTQers and make it an event. Take pictures. Then tell us what you got and where you stored it.

Good luck! Ragmop/Sandy--looking forward to the new public library opening just 10 minutes from here

That's one of the things I love about Woodland. People whine "but that's all the way across town!" Which means a ten minute drive. Sheesh -- I've spent longer than that looking for a parking spot in Sacred-Tomato. You're right -- it's all relative. *grin*

In So. Cal. you can get on the freeway and sit for 20 minutes and never move! Traffic just keeps getting worse all the time here and it hasn't been good for many years. It is really weird to see the freeway traffic between LA and Vegas just sitting or crawling. Really crazy in the desert in the middle of nowhere.

The rest of the country better get ready for more traffic as folks in Cal. bail out for better environs. No doubt some of Sandy's problem since a lot of folks have left here for Texas.

It's the same here. And this also is a small town. We recently lost our only LQS but now two new ones are opening. I don't know......both are motivated and knowledgeable ladies with good intentions. I do'nt know if they can make a living. And I don't know if I can afford their fabric. Sometimes WallyWorld is my only option. And they ahve inexpensive thread and notions too. The spray basting that I use is half at WW what it would be anywhere else. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Oh well.....life goes on, I suppose. The problem here is that we really are far from anywhere else. The closest "next" LQS is an hour away. If you want a Hancock's or such it's more like 3 hours. I hate the corporate mentality that ultimately will completely automate stores. We'll walk into a sterile store where there are no people, check ourselves out, and goodness only knows who will be able to earn a living in that world. Cuz nobody will be paying people to do anything.

Grumpy this morning, Sunny

I remember buying fabric at JC Penny's..and the woolworth drug store too.

When I worked at Macy's clothing was marked up 400 percent. Kinda puts those 20 percent off sales in a new light, doesn't it? I doubt fabric is marked up 400 percent.

I wouldn't want to live in California because of the housing costs! For $300,000 there I can get a

1000 square foot home in a so-so neighborhood.

Here in the midwest... it will buy me 2500 square feet... 1/2 acre yard... good schools... in a quiet family neighborhood.

Do they pay that much better to people in California? If not -- how can you all afford to live?

Wait. Back up. You mean you're still going to have at least three choices for fabric less than a half hours drive??? You should feel blessed.

One way is that I don't have to turn my heater on until well after Thanksgiving. My heating bill was a bit high last year -- I think about $40 a month. ;-P
