Is it still a quilt?

Got a question for you guys. If the piece of work is mounted on canvas, is it still a quilt?

I searched online dictionaries for definitions. I think if you want to call it a quilt do so.

ART QUILTS: Distinguishing art quilts from the main category of quilts can be difficult. Art quilts can be created using any of the techniques of a quilt - piecing, applique, whole cloth, or even machine embroidery. These are techniques, though, and art involves more than mere technique. Meaningfulness, in whatever way the viewer perceives it, is involved in the experience of an art quilt, as opposed to a quilt built as an exercise in craft or technical capabilities, or for practical bedroom purposes. QUILT: bedding made of two layers of cloth filled with stuffing and stitched together

MOSIAC: art of arranging colored pieces of marble, glass, tile, wood, or other material to produce a surface ornament.

Perhaps 'quilted art work' (or quilted work of art!). But it could also be 'mounted art quilt'.

Question: if it's painted, mounted on canvas and framed, is it still a quilt?

Just wondering.

is it three layers...top, batting, backing. its a quilt. if its only the top mounted on whatever, it is patchwork. needs three layers to be a quilt. thats my take on it anyhow. jeanne

Well actually it needs to be quilted! Could even be 2 layers, some quilts have no batting. Roberta in D

Oh dear, I read if it had two layers and no batting it was a counterpane. Perhaps that is for beds only?

I've always liked your designation "quilted art work" better for anything that isn't used as bedding.

point taken, Roberta. my faaaaaaaaaavourite quilt only has two layers, flannel appliqued blocks on top and fleece backing. keeps me warm as toast in more ways than one. :)) also summer quilts can be two layers. i'd forgotten all that. ta for the heads up, jeanne

Quilting makes the quilt. That sort of running stitch to hold however many layers together. We've seen plenty of quilts with for example a fleece backing, no batting needed. Still quilts if they are quilted!

IMO it's a comforter if it's tied and not a quilt, but that's another of those religious issues. OTOH My feather comforter is technically a quilt, since it is definitely quilted all over in a large grid, but I don't think of it as a quilt because it's -well, feathers. So I'll allow for gray areas. Roberta in D
