So that's what you're retired from! I've got about 5 more years. Then I'd like to go back into the schools as a computer aide (part time job). Or even to bring quilting in. High schools don't even teach sewing anymore unless the home ec teacher happens to like to sew.

I worked quilting into 5th Grade with math - recognizing shapes and measuring with a ruler.

At my new school, I got moved to 4th Grade. The principal loves quilting. She seems to think I can do something with quilting with Nevada history. Covered wagons and all that stuff, I suppose.

No Child Left Behind -- no art, no PE. Even after-school programs are academic. What happened to Arts & Crafts? I think they have to go to the Boys and Girls Clubs for that nowadays. No morning recess because elementary students must have 90 minutes uninterrupted for Language Arts.

Believe me, it's taking everything I have to make myself do these appliqued blocks. I'm looking at it as a challenge. I do all sorts of other handwork. I've embroidered, done needlepoint and lots of cross-stitch, and I knit and crochet. So I feel like I OUGHT to be able to do applique. For some reason, though, I find it difficult.

I've also done the pieced block now and I'm almost through with the paper-pieced one. I finished the appliqued one first, and while it has its own personality and may not be as symmetrical as Jessamy's great pattern, I like the way it turned out.

oops, i forgot to send this last night and now you got pix up. wooooohooooooo, those are gorgeous. love that ivory/silverish fabric you used. the applique looks great. dont see any probs at all with it. afterall the suns massive flames dont all flash the same size at the same time so having it as you do looks perfect to me. :) great job on all six blocks so far. this is gonna be a fantastic quilt when finished. keep up the great work. oh yea, what technique did you use for the sun? jeanne

so wheres the pix of your applique? dont see any RCTQ blocks on your pages. wait i did find them. i'll bet your mom loves her mums day quilt. lots of other gorgeous quilts there too. love the dimension of your honeycomb waffle. your Xmas pillows turned out great, very festive indeed. i see your kitty helper certainly enjoys all your hardwork too, lol. what a cutie. after all the discussion which technique did you use to make the sun? jeanne

Almost all my fabric came from my trip to Mary Jo's in Gastonia, NC, except for the lighter batik with the leaves, which I ordered from a lady who actually goes somewhere that the batiks are made (Guam?) and buys a bunch and then sells them. I'm very happy with the fabrics, even though these aren't colors I might choose for myself. I chose these with a room's decor in mind.

i think you did a brilliant job on both the applique blocks. the interfacing i use is very very thin and i never cut it away unless its multiple layers and its getting annoying to work with, then i cut out excess thats in my way. ok, another question, did you do it all by hand? i usually interface by machine, then stitch it down by hand. i made a bunch of leaves back when i found the interfacing method and still havent used them all on blocks. jeanne

Well, thank you! (I'm still pretty insecure with this applique stuff! :))

Carole, as i looooove applique, i'm always curious what part of it drives folks nuts. so what part would that be that still makes you insecure? jeanne :))

Well...

  1. It's slow.
  2. The points and corners are tedious and I have trouble making them look neat.
  3. I feel like the finished product isn't as sturdy, or more likely to fray, and most of my quilts are bed quilts and need to be washed.
  4. I never seem to end up with an applique that "matches" the pattern! :)
  5. It's not fun.

That said....here's my major hand appliqued piece so far:

I was having problems with all of them, but it turned out to be my computer trying to do something I didn't tell it to do....something called "realevent"...I think I've gotten rid of the bugger now, so next month shouldn't be a problem.
