Killing icons

The Bernina 440QE that I love dearly has been here about a year. Her only flaw (for me) is that the icons beside the buttons are ... what... looking for a word. Incomprehensible? They look like little black sailboats and mean nothing to my brain, especially when I am trying to remember that stitch 157 is running stitch for kitty whiskers and stitch 45 is a dainty blanket stitch Plus I have the stitch #2 set to do a really short ending stitch. Too hard. I just took my fine permanent black Sharpie and made some 'just for me' new marks on Miss Bernina. At the silly icon for 'start at the beginning of the stitch' I wrote Start. At the one for needle up/down, I wrote Up. A ridiculous assistance but it made my embroidery on the crib quilt so much kinder to my busy head. There are 3 icons that I have no clue what they might cause to happen. One day I'll look it up. My solution may not be a good idea if you're hoping to sell or trade your SM. Polly

My icons are all pictures of the stitches. Or the number or letter if you are in that menu. Up/Down is two little arrows pointing in the direction that light up an arrow in the selected direction in the window. It's dead easy. I love Lily. :)

Maybe a little hatch opens up and they come out on an arm and get to work adjusting stuff or removing snargles? ;)

Or maybe it just sews pix of these items: less useful but more decorative!

A down the lane neighbor has a new Janome; might be a 6600. That SM has enough icons to keep her busy for a decade at least. I sure hope they make sense to her. Polly

Is that like sewing machine graffiti? LOL I would have a tough time putting shaprie on a machine. I would probably have to do a chart or something instead. Glad you are brave enough to take charge of that machine full of crazy icons though. It should work for you.I think I really am a mechanical machine person. Taria

Ha! You would laugh at my computer keyboard graffiti. Some lamebrain (or maybe that's me) decided to move the delete key off to an obscure location. I painted 'delete' with a rather violent loud yellow. At least I don't have to hunt that one. Polly "Taria" <

Polly, that's why I keep the manual for my Viking Sapphire right beside my machine - to answer my questions about the icons. BTW, the pliers & screw driver button is the SET Menu button.

Yeah, sure. I knew that. Doesn't everybody think of pliers and a screwdriver when they set their menu? Polly

I didn't until I read the manual - still don't really understand how pliers and screwdrivers equals SET! :-)

Since they were able to put "Prog" on the program button, don't see why they couldn't put "Set" on the set button. They were also able to spell out OK, Stop, Fix, and Start/Stop on their respective buttons. On my machine the "Heart" button means Save to my Stitches. The whole thing makes no sense to me.

Guess what a filled circle beside an empty circle means? Give up? That tells the BSR to start or stop. Both. Any relation between the function and the icon is purely coincidental. Donna, have you discovered that the Sapphire just loves a plain old green-band Schmetz size 90 needle for quilting? My friends quilts at extremely high speed and the Sapphire can really go with a sharp new 90. Polly

I usually use universal Schmetz 90's - buy them 100 at a time. Mostly don't quilt anything except Project Linus quilts. I'll have to try the green-band.

Just looked at the Emeralds and Sapphires while I was getting my bobbin case fixed. The little pliers/screwdriver icon is for "Tools". Sort of makes sense. Tools include pressure foot setting, fix stitch on/off, and more.

H> Kate, you should just SEE the buttons on the Viking Emerald that my quilt= ing
