Leaving June 30-- Not off Topic

Received a message tonight that my internet provider will no longer carry usenet newsgroups as of June 30. They said that we can have some service at a discount for the first 3 months, but I don't have the money to pay, so as of June 30, I will no longer be around. I will see those of you on Facebook. I hope to have some quilts posted on FB soon-- including the one I am working on for my master teacher.

hey Debbi, my isp also quit carrying ngs. checking the propertys of your post i can see you're using Thunderbird thru your isp. i use outlook express now thru my isp. my isp quit carrying ngs about 3 yrs back so now i use these three different ng servers still using outlook express. eternal-september.org news.aioe.org news.albasani.net to use the first one you have to go to their website and register. not for the other two tho. just add them into wherever you set up newsgroups in thunderbird with those names as i've typed them above and then you'll need to download the full list of ngs per server (takes a few minutes, no big deal tho). then 'subscribe' to rctq and any other ngs you fancy reading. not all servers will carry all the tens of thousands (literally) ngs around the globe but those 3 all carry rctq. try that and let us know if ya have any probs with them. i'm off to eat dinner now but will check back here tomorrow. in the meantime there are others here who use thunderbird for their ng reading. so someone will probly chime in with better instructions if needed for you. good luck, j.

Hey I got that same notice. I freaked out at the discount price! I posted on one of the newsgroups, alt.obituaries, since it WAS on topic! I've had several replies. Some that cost money and some that do not. I just set up one to a usenet service news.aioe.org that is free. This newsgroup is there, as are the other ones that I really care to read.

Another one that was suggested was

that has a one time set-up fee of $3.95. I'm trying the news.aloe.org first to see how it goes.

I use albasani.net since Comcast quit newsgroups -- it's free and I've had no problems with it.

Debbi, don't go away. Use Google. I know a lot of people don't like it, but I tried different delivery formats and couldn't stand them. Google works really, really well. You could also have it delivered via Outlook Express if you have that. Before you give up and go, give Google a chance.

That's the one I also use. Works great for me! ME-Judy

I agree. I use Google too. It does take a little getting used to, but it's not really a big deal. I get a digest of active messages on my email a couple times a day. So there's really no reason for anyone to drop out of the group if they don't want to. KJ

Hey Debbi, We aren't letting you go anywhere if we have a choice. : ) Hope you can get one of the other set ups to work for you. I am on eternal-september and it has been pretty good. Taria

Donna, why are you paying for newsgroups when there are plenty of free ng servers around? i have three i can choose from and they are all free to use. you could use that money to buy stash or chocolate. j.

Debbi, I read RCTQ via Google Groups. Go to Google. From the bar at the upper left corner, choose "more." A drop-down menu appears and "groups" is at the bottom of it.

Use a free server. We use albasani.net, and it has been *completely* problem-free, not even a minuscule glitch. aioe.org is another free one - we moved away after they had to shut down for a while (their equipment got flooded), but they're back now and seem to be working well.

They'll both work with Thunderbird, far better than struggling with Google. Really, don't go there.

Some of us pay for a newsgroup server because we want a newsgroup that allows binary. Any of the free servers I've check on are text only. I use news.individual.net which costs me all of $14.29 per year!

My transition from AT&T's server to the eternal-september.org news server was absolutely seamless. Installation was two easy steps, and it's very reliable.

I dislike google groups intensely, personally.
