Making a square top into a rectangle

Mom has made four 27 inch blocks and wants to make a rectangular quilt top. When joined the blocks will form a sort of Trip Around the World look. We have thought of using borders that are wider at the head and foot than on the sides. What other options are there? Debra in VA See my quilts at

It depends on the size of the quilt you want. If it's for a bed quilt, you could make a section that goes over the pillows by sewing a border, then a row or two of blocks that mimic the TAW, wide enough , and then another border. If it's for a lap quilt, you could do strips on each end that go from lightest to darkest, or whichever...ones that match the TAW fabrics. That's my suggestion, off the top of my head.

A row of contrasting sampler blocks at each end could look nice, separated from the TATW section by sashing strips, then a border strip around the whole piece. I think 6 8.5" blocks at each end would work, with narrow sashing between. Roberta in D

I think she will have to settle for the strips at each end sort of thing. She is planning narrow borders on the sides and wide borders on each end. Debra in VA See my quilts at

She's still planning to go with the borders. There isn't enough of the other fabrics to do small blocks at this point. Debra in VA See my quilts at
