Stash raid!

Mom and I were invited to a stash raid today. We got some goodies!

Since I joined Terbear's Your Pick Swap I knew I had some colors I needed for making other people's blocks so I used the raid like a mini store and got some fabrics that would work with some of my swap block ideas. I also got some back issues of various quilting magazines, some quilt blocks, and oddly enough a painting by a local artist for my livingroom. Mom scored roughly the same things for herself--but no painting.

We had a good time! Debra in VA See my quilts at

Awww, gee . . . Debra. I thought maybe you'd made out a list of who was at Paducah. You know, all the good stuff like where their stashes were located, what sort of bribes we would want to bring for the QI guards, and which of us is qualified to drive vehicles pulling loaded trailers. And speaking of paintings by local artists, it was my great misfortune to be seated at lunch today facing a painting by a local artist. I'll bet he bragged that he had never had a lesson in his life. LOL! There are always a few paintings like that around, aren't there? Thank goodness the artists always improve.

Please tell us how this stash raid was organized. My husband would like to hold one at my house. Seriously, I have been thinking of inviting friends over for such an event this fall. I don't want to haul everything that is OK for them to take out of the studio. How do I indicate which items are OK. My husband suggests that at the next fund raiser for our quilting group I offer the highest bidder a half hour alone in my studio. They can have anything they are able to remove from the room within that half hour.

Kits can be a lot of work (ask me how I know that! lol)

What about pack of pieces of specific sizes? Squares, FQs and strips are all suitable. Even the fabric companies are starting to market strip cuts now (called Jelly Rolls or similar?). I would love to be able to buy bundles of 3" or

4" strips in colour groupings or just scrap combinations.

QI bribes? Why, meat, of course. Works on most QIs and on most any husband that might otherwise get in our way. Not many men would ignore a steak.

Oh, dear. That must have been a terrible sight. Mine is a lush green woodland scene with a lovely deer in it. Needs a frame, then it's up on the wall over the TV. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Susan, this 97 yr old lady only has one or two people over at a time, and accompanies them to the small stash room. She has her stash in boxes and tells us which boxes we can and can not rootle through.

If your stash isn't in boxes you could make piles on the studio table and invite as many drooling quilters as you think you can keep under control. Tell them that the tables are ok--but the rest you are keeping. Oh, and tell them to bring their own bags for hauling away their finds. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Thanks for the suggestion but then I would have to clear off the tables. Every horizontal surface in my life is always full. I am not a neat person.

Well, you're in good company. Those horizontal surfaces just beg to be covered anyway.

My advice would be to get some cheap bins or free boxes and clear off just enough table space to put one box on (or put it on your ironing board) and two or three ladies could have a good rootlet one box at a time. Debra in VA See my quilts at
