Making Labels

Is there a tutorial somewhere that would help me learn to make better quilt labels? I also need to buy a printer and would like to make sure that the one I choose can handle printing on stabilized cloth.

Thanks,

When you say "better labels" -- what do you mean? content? design? you're having trouble printing on fabric? trouble affixing it to the quilt?

Better labels is pretty vague -- I'm sure you'll get lots of ideas -- but if you could be a little more specific -- it might be helpful.

Let's make it simple. Is there a tutorial on how to make quilt labels...then I can pick the sections I need?

Thanks, LIT

Hi Lynne,

Don't know if it's any help, but we machine embroider labels either onto a signature block, subtly in the bottom left corner, or on the back. The results are really nice, neat, and professional.

Don't know about Lynne, but I'd like those type. I am making more wholecloth quilts these days and they are reversible. I hate the idea of a big patch job, but I would like to _sign_ my quilts. I don't put bindings on, but edge to the middle like the old Welsh Quilts, so a label-patch is too much.

When you say "we" do you mean you make them commercially, or do them for yourself?

Hi Nel,

Well first, I mis-typed. That should be "bottom RIGHT corner".

We don't use any kind of patch; we embroider directly on the quilt like any other embroidery embellishment. Just our personal taste - we think it's less obnoxious and just looks better. Anyone's mileage may vary.

"We" is DW and myself. We're a team. I design - she sews/ quilts. ;-)

Howdy!

"we" - I figured it was like "the collective" in Star Trek, the Borg, or Torchwood's 456 (what the h#ll is that thing?), or, of course, TRW: The Royal We (we have so many Queens in rctq). ..."resistance is futile"

Labels: when I can be bothered, I rootle for the printed labels I fixed up years ago, heavy muslin soaked in Bubble Jet Set, dried, ironed to freezer paper, sent thru' the printer, over-inked w/ the pigma pens. I prefer to just write on the quilt. June Tailor Jet Printer fabrics:

a bit "pricey" for some users, but how many labels do you need?print a pageful at a time

Nel: How about incorporating the 'signature' right into the quilting? Your name and the date could even be a trapunto feature.

The beautiful old coverlets often had the words in the weaving and ran them in both directions, so it could be read front or back. Clear as mud? "We" aim to please!

Hi Nel,

It took me a couple of minutes to understand (and then visualize) what you were saying, but I think it's another really cool idea - I like it!
