Microwaved Potatoes (On Topic)

So I've made some of these microwaved potatoes quilted bags. (We've got potato fabric in the store that's not going to sell unless we have a project of some sort.)

Has anyone here used one of these things? I'm afraid it will catch on fire in the microwave, but I'm not willing to experiment in MY microwave. But I'm also not wanting to sell a sure-fire fire hazard!

There was a long story on the radio just before Christmas. The poor fellow was trying to get dressed without waking his wife and baby. It seems that the clothes dryer had not been turned on and all of his underwear was wet. He tried drying them in the microwave and did indeed set them on fire. He couldn't open the microwave because then he would be setting off the smoke alarm. I don't think that story had an ending. It just went on and on. Could you just make some potholders with the potato fabric? How about a casserole carrier? Polly

I do have a microwave potato bag and I use it a lot. It works well. I used all cotton fabric (lined mine with unbleached muslin) and cotton batting (warm'n'white). I saw some at a craft fair and asked about the fire hazard. She said that the problems were with old microwaves. So two caveats -- use all cotton and only in a newer microwave.

Mom made each of us one for Christmas. We don't do many baked potatoes, but we tried one - no fire!

I was given one, but I'm like you -- I'm afraid to use it. For one thing, I don't know what kind of batting is inside, and your link says to be sure it's cotton.

Joan, Several years ago I read this same idea here in RCTQ Land, or maybe just got the link here. Anyhow, I made a few of the bags ...and 'taught' my bee how to do it. WELL .... at least one member had a mini fire in the microwave. Meantime, I was using mine without problem, UNTIL one day I saw that the bag was badly scorched inside. These bags were all made of 100% cotton fabric and batting. Now I use the extra bags as table mats or pot holders. I don't cook in them any more. PAT in VA/USA

My microwaves program for baked potatoes includes a red element in the roof of the oven getting hot so that the skins are crispy.

I think using one of the bags would result in a crispy bag!!

I made one and it made the best potatoes I ever tasted. Used it over and over. Right up to the time it caught "a far" and burned up the microwave.

Sure made good potatoes, though.

I'm sorry for your loss Cindy....but your message certainly gave me a giggle! I guess that would be a good indication of whether one should make baked potato bags. You didn't make any decisions or judgements for anyone else....just stated the facts, ma'am. :-)

No great loss. Old microwave. The potatoes were mourned though.

I'm even willing to try it again, they really were that good. I think I will make the next one out of an old towel. And I will keep a cup of water in the micro when I cook the potatoes, just like I do with my rice bag.
