Moda Layer Cake Wall Hanging

Here is the above mentioned, latest finished quilt. It is a 4' x 5' Wall Hanging. The genesis of this quilt started when I bought a Layer Cake pkg of reproduction fabrics from Moda, for cheap. This pkg sat around for a couple of months until I could figure out what to do with the 10" x 10" squares. I had an inspiration to cut the squares into strips and make a log cabin pattern group of squares of randomly placed pieces, and then frame them with some more period pattern sashing. I let the number of squares dictate the size of the quilt and what I came up with was 4' x 5'. I think this quilt is one that gave me the most satisfaction upon completion, and I am going to hang it prominently in our hall stairway, so that I can see it every time I go up or down the stairs. (my wife's idea, and a good one). I am going to delve deeper into the period fabric pool and see what comes of it. This one, I think, was a winner.

Very nice, John! Sometimes it's hard to figure out what to do with those pre-cut packages. :)

Right you are. I scratched my head trying to come up with a use for these things. That is why it took so many months to figure it out. I bought the pkg on impulse, because it what so cheap, and then had buyers remorse when I got it home and realized that I didn't know what to do with them. All's well in the end, though.

I love all your quilts but especially love the Hollow Cube one - it's fantastic.

No, the red was part of my stash. I used it because of the long standing use of red as the chimney fire symbolism in the Log Cabin Block. I don't know if that particular color is "authentic", but there you have it.

That one almost made me loose my mind. After completing it, I swore off of making any more hexagon shaped quilts. Three hexagon shaped quilt patterns later, I am sticking by my statement. They are very demanding and leave me exhausted. But time is a great healer, and the siren song of hexagons, sings every so often, it's bewitching song, and pulls me back into the lair of the hexagon goddess, where I lose all hope of escape; there to linger until you satisfy that most demanding goddess.

Oh, I do like that one! I have noticed that you always (or nearly always) separate your blocks with sash strips. That is not something I'd usually do with Log Cabin, but I think it is an especially effective treatment for your collection of random LC. I will keep it in mind for a scrappy LC. Well done. PAT
