My $10 find

I think I was very lucky this week. I visited one of the local opportunity shops and found a 'quilt top and bottom' that had been made to cover a doona. The opening was finished with bias tape and Velcro (sp).

The small blocks are 2 inch squares and on some of the blocks you can see where the triangles have been sewn individually together to make the block, on others it's not so obvious. The seams are all over the place and I probably will have to redo some of them.

Here's a couple of pics if you would like to have a look.

I have quite a big of work to do before it will be useful for a winter snuggler. There is enough to make two whole quilts - it is huge and when I undo the seams I will have two quilt tops 7'6" x 6'.

The QI likes it and has already put his stamp of approval on it.

Wish me luck, it's going to take me a looooong time to fix.

My Webster's goes straight from doom to door - and the thesaurus says it doesn't know what a doona is. I'm sort of thinking it may be something like a feather comforter or duvet. Was this a test? Can we wait until after coffee? In any event, your $10 find surely is dazzling. . . and I'm so glad Mr. Kitty thinks it's a very good buy. Polly

OOO -- too bad you didn't find the quilt while GeoBear was wstill there -- he could have helped you work on it :-))). I need another translation -- besides doona, that is. What is an opportunity shop? I'm thinking it might be what we call a second hand shop. This is a shop that sells things which have already been used by another person and have been given away. When you buy something yours are the "second hands" that use the item :-). I'm with Polly in thinking a doona is a down comforter or something similar. Aussie language HELP please :-)). As the Aussies are still asleep, I can tell you, Polly, that 'doona' is Australian for 'duvet' >g< . In message , Polly Esther writes

As I am on the conputer before Di this morning I will answer for her ( and I know that she won't mind)

As some of you have guessed Doona = duvet also called a Continental Quilt although these are usually filled with cheap polyester and /or dacron. Opportunity Shop = Op Shop / Second Hand Shop / Goodwill ( I have seen some of them here) usually run by church groups

Good find Di. That could be a big job if you start undoing seams

Good Morning all,

Firstly, thank you to Dee in Oz for the explanation of both the 'doona' and 'opportunity shop'.

Dee, it will be a long and difficult job to just square up the tops so I have to undo the two side seams before I do that.

Thank you too, to the other posters.

Cheers,

Wow! You got that for only $10? Awesome! I love it--the effect of the tiny triangle blocks, the scrappiness, and the colors. It will definitely be worth your time. :-)

Best regards, Michelle in Nevada

It sure is scrappy. It will look better when it has been pressed.

Thanks Jeanne, I couldn't recall the type of material.

I have already started to think how I am going to fix it.

i just remembered there are a lot of rayon indo batiks out there. might be worth doing a quick burn test on one piece just to be sure. i'm not sure i could tell the difference with those little pieces. the fondle on little pieces loses something in the translation. just a thot. i'm trying to narrow down the right country for those. could be from a number of places in that region...indo, malay, viet, thai. all bought in the same place at the same time possibly. hmmmmm. j.

Thanks for that info Jeanne, fortunately the type of material wont be a problem because when they are finished they will be just for my DH and I to snuggle under watching TV to throw over the lounge suite to protect from cat fur.

I am glad it wasn't me that did the cutting up or sewing but I do appreciate their hard work.
