Naming of a quilt

I am trying to think of a name for my white and green Irish Chain quilt. It's at the longarmer's so no pictures yet but I'd like to have a label all made when I get it back in a few weeks. That way I can sew part of the label when sewing on the binding. Any suggestions as to a name?? The back does have shamrocks.

So I suggest: Fáilte isteach! Mean's "welcome in" in Irish.

Pronounced FAWL-chuh ISH-tach (the last 'ch' sounds like the 'ch' in Scottish "loch")

According to

"chain" in Irish is "slabhra".

That entry has the most bizarre examples I have ever seen in a dictionary. I guess it says something about contemporary Ireland that everybody needs a translation for "to own that fraction of the ordinary share capital of the last owned company through the intermediary or chain of intermediaries".

I thought it would be nice to have a name as it's going into the fair and will be hanging. I'm leaning towards Celtic Slabhbra.

I don't name cars (except for one my DT and I shared in high school years ago) or sewing machines, and I don't give most of my quilts names other than the name of the pattern, if that much. However, there are exceptions, like my Doggie Brick Road (thanks to Ally in the UK), Pawprints on My Heart, and a couple of others.

I name my quilts, my cars, most of my sewing machines. Many quilts have been part of my "poetry in cloth" series, where I depict a known poem or write my own. My current vehicle, a Mazda Tribute, is named Gulliver; previous vehicles have included Luna [silver Honda Civic], Hank [silver Honda CRV], Rosie [Saturn Coupe], Casper [white Hyundai], George [old Chevy truck], etc. Current machines include Speed-not [FW221K named after the guy in the second-hand shop where she came from], Scout [teal colored Singer 15 knock-off being given away today], and my new-to-me Kenmore won on eBay.

Hmmm,

I wish my mother were still with me. 2nd generation Irish American, I am sure she would have a 'fun' name for your quilt.

Years ago, I visited her apartment, and she asked me to water her plants... by name. I had a question.....

Mom... I understand Philip for the philodendron, but... why is this one called Moses?

Wait for it.........

Because, she said, he is a 'wandering jew'.

Howdy!

Naming things... do they come when you call them by name?

Do you ever get the names confused, like my mom who would call the boys by each others' names, or call me her sisters' or aunts' names?

Naming quilts: 2 women at the quilt show, Friday, noting that one quilt was labeled: Unnamed One woman said, "Why wouldn't she give that quilt a name?!" The other replied, "She couldn't be bothered? Is it any less a quilt, or any less award-winning for not having a name?" I think the second woman probably doesn't name her machines, either. ;-P

R/Sandy-- namer, sometimes, sometimes not

There being 7 of us kids, 4 having mostly used nicknames led for a lot of dad calling several names followed by 'well, whoever you are'. Maybe that is why I don't name things. Too many names around to keep track of already.

I use the names that cars and machines already have. Really another name would just be a nickname. My Bernina is '930', my car a CRV.

DH calls Ginger pup 'Cindy'. Not sure why but she usually comes when she is called either.

Maybe I don't have enough quilts around here that they need names to keep them from being mixed up. I should probably work on that. : ) Taria
