nedd help - "masculine" quilting patterns

OK, a little backhistory: Friend from church saw the signature quilts i made for a family that moved away and decided she wanted a quilted wallhanging of her company's logo to give to her boss as a CHristmas gift. NOt a problem, she even gave me a paper mock-up of how she wanted it (size and placement og images a BIG plus!). So, I was going to stitch all the pieces down - yes, it's applique and that will hold the main design and look pretty good, BUT....there's a lot of empty space around the design.

Now, neither of us want to detract away from the logo, but she agreed with me (knowing nothing about quilts or quilting) that having a lot of empty space probably wasn't a good thing. Her only requirement was that it still "look masculine". I was originally thinking of loose stipling just to fill in the spaces, but then I got to thinking...are there "masculine" quilting patterns??

So, I come to you, fellow quilters.....hit me with your suggestions, I'm all ears!

space around the design.

Ok, since none of the "experienced women quilters" have responded, I thought I would giver you my thoughts. Why not use outline stitching in decreasing or increasing rings of the profile of the logo and any other features on the quit. That way you don't inject any gender specific element (girly) into the whole thing. Just keep them about

2-3 inches apart and that should provide stability to the large areas of the quilt.

One man's opinion,

Thanks Johm ,k I hadn't even thought of that. I'd probably do it around the complete logo - it's sails with the company name across them...that would fill it in nicely, I think and as you said, wouldn't inject any gender into the quilt....I greatly appreciate your help...will get pictures when this monstrosity is all finished....background if forest green, sails are burgundy, writing is grey...will be quilting with black, and we are thinking about either a black binding or else using the burgundy...will be doing that by hand so don't really have to decide right now.

Thanks again!

You said sails so I assume it's a boat? sailboat? I like John's idea a lot if that's the case, the outline increasing a bit as it heads to the edge, like rings when a rock is tossed in the water. To 'sex it up' a bit you could start with the first two or so rows of outline quilting the darkest thread and gradually go to lighter thread color as it gets further out, each ring having a bit more area than the last between outlines, if that sounds clear. Or start with the thread color in your first few outlines the same as the solid background and then let it gradually change in shades until the last few are the same color as the binding, that would tie everything in nicely. It would give not only a nice texture but interest for the eye on a lot of plain background but still keep the logo as a the point of interest.

Larissa, you could also reduce the size of the logo sails and do just outlines of them in the empty space, perhaps. Echo quilting is always a winner. Some sort of grid could also be done.... something like hanging diamonds or such. Sounds like a fun project actually.

Howdy!

This "experienced woman quilter" thinks it's a non-question. "Masculine" quilting pattern? Huh? Well, there was the fabric that several quilters got excited about a few years ago, cheap quality stuff, a repeated print of tiny penises... why does this bring up a "Well, duh!" lightbulb? Anyway, my recommendation is to adequately quilt it, without leaving big empty gaps. Stippling? Must you?

Now now...stippling was the only thing that came to mind as I was taking the 3rd call to come in during dinner - the other 2 were my parents, and they aren't as easy to ignore as telemarketers...lol. I'll sketch out some possibilities and see which one I like best....may use thread matching the background as it wouldn't detract from the main design.....she still isn't decided about the binding, so we'll work on that as well.....oy!

Good thing is I only have 2 letters left to baste in place...yay!!

Since the logo's a boat, why not quilt some waves? :)

It sounds wonderful, Larisa!! Will you post pics when you're done?? :)
