Need your input!

The only input I would have on this is, unless you really need to have it nailed down, I would favour a laptop any day of the week.

Th ability to move the amchine around the house, garden and out to other places is priceless. And with new sewing machines and other peripherals that hitch up, it's an asset to take "Mohammed to the Mountain", if you see what I mean.

Other than that? Pick a budget and go see a few shops and ask what they can give you in that price range.

Oh, and I have to recommend (again) HP for their after sales service.

I would love a laptop with 8 GB of memory and 500 GB HDD then I could do all I wanted as fast as I wanted - I wouldn't have 'insufficient memory' - the dual core processor sounds good. These sizes will be average to standard soon so go for the most you can get with your money. Oh, and don't forget the USB ports, they are vital to swapping info with someone else.

Apart from what's already been said, *generally*, you work backwards. You figure out what software you'll need to run, and get a machine based on all the software's needs. If you're going with a Windows- based machine, generally any machine with enough guts to run Windows efficiently should have enough to run any other software, but there are exceptions. (Someone please advise on Macs).

Graphics-heavy applications require a bit more umph, and if you're going to do a lot with photos, artwork, and especially video, you'll also need more memory. The quilting applications I know of are about average, but check their websites for what system specs they advise (not just require).

I second the HP laptop, I spend most evenings in the living room watching TV, with my laptop, we have wifi and I can even take it out to the garden, porch, deck, basement, etc.

I still have my desktop but it is my last big setup, with the tower and all. We have a backup of some kind of terabyte, in a unit next to our wifi, and network. My SO is a computer geek wannabe.

I also keep an old laptop with an old OS that runs my SM program that would cost me a lot of money to upgrade.

We also have an all-in-one printer scanner, copier that prints fantastic photos, all the colors are individual cartridges and there are 5 colors and black. I always run out of yellow before anything else.

There are NEVER enough USB ports!!!

Thank you all for your input! As for Mac - I'm not so much into that; my old computer is a Dell and it has run for 9 years without any trouble at all! So I'll get another Dell. They customize them, so I can get what I want, if I know what I want. ;-) Thanks to you all, and my brother and DH, too, I think I know now, so I'll contact my personal salesperson tomorrow, while DD is in Kindergarten. It's not going to be cheap, but I hope it'll last me another ten years or so...
