New lights in studio

About half the lights in my studio have been energy savers for several years. Lately I have switched to all energy savers. These lights are fine once they warm-up. The only problem is each morning I find myself turning on the lights and then reading emails and news groups while the lights warm-up. I am spending too much time at the computer and not enough at the sewing machine. Guess I will have to install a timer to remind me to leave the computer and move to the sewing machine.

Other ways I am saving energy:

Turning off the computer monitor when not using. (still leave the computer on 24/7)

Not using my steam generator iron unless ironing yards and yards.

Turning off my iron if I won't need it for at least ten minutes. It only takes a minute or two to heat-up again.

Grouping my car errands. This not only saves gas but also time. I limit the "runs to the quilting shop just because". This saves money since I often would pick-up more than what was on my list. I am trying to run all errands on Tuesday which keeps me home and out of trouble the rest of the week.

Limiting outside lighting on our house. The trend in our neighborhood is for decorative lawn lighting. I hope some of it is the newer type of lights. I don't need nightlights in my house because the yard lights from the neighbors is plenty bright to lead the way inside my house. My new bushes are pretty but who needs to see them at 2 a.m.?

We have replaced our entire heating and cooling system for our home with a new system that is wonderfully efficient. Our power bill has been reduced by half. DH and I figure we'll only have to live 187 years to recover our investment. Polly

I agree about old fridges! Friends are getting a third one to put in their garage! (Second is in the basement). They shop at Costco and buy huge containers of stuff that need refrigerating after opening. She would probably save more by unplugging 2 fridges and shopping for items on sale! There are only 4 people to feed in her household, not 10!

If the outdoor, landscape lighting is not solar, it is probably low-voltage. A lot of people use outdoor landscaping lights for safety reasons -- it supposedly discourages prowlers.

We have an indoor courtyard/atrium with a large planter in our building. No worry about prowlers there, but we have the low voltage landscape lights in the planter because the look nice; you can put quite a few lights on a 120 watt transformer, because most of the lights are only 4 or 7 watts. Our lights are on a timer, so they are only on for a few hours in the evening.

Not electricity, but water... I convinced DH to save the initial burst of cold water when you first turn on the shower. We now have two buckets in the shower and each initial burst of cold water provides 2-3 gallons of water that now go to the roses instead of the drain.

Great idea. I hadn't thought of that. I have told my husband that in our retirement home we are currently planning I want a hot water booster in the bathroom. He loves to use really hot water when he shaves so leaves the water running for a long time until it is really hot. I have used these systems in Europe and they are wonderful. When you want really hot water you just flip the switch and it is instantly hot. Holding hot water in a tank waiting until someone needs it is not the most efficient way.
