I like the Nexcare clear first aid tape from 3M for that purpose. It's clear so you can see through it and has enough texture to help grip your fabric.

Well I didn't think of Yogi, darn. That pup is so loveable I'd forget all about quilting and just want to play with him. Humm, that gives me an idea, maybe I can get Traveler, my tom cat, to run his nose on the template to make it sticky. He's left enough nose prints on my kitchen window that I have to wash it once a week.
