newsgroups

I'm tried Google Newsgroup and I found rctq. It didn't take long to find the group but I'm still looking for others.

So, yes, Deb, you'll find us free at Google. And I just might start saving $2.95 each month. :0 thanks, j.

I've been posting via google since my reader dropped newsgroups a few years ago. It's not bad once you get used to it. Works for me, anyway. I do cringe when the folks on another group I post to start announcing that they're killfiling "all Google users". (I think this is because lots of spammers use Google). According to the upper echelon of usenet, Google posters are kind of a lower life form. That's okay, cuz I was an AOL user to begin with, that tells you how technically-savvy I am WRT all things internet. All I want to do is read two or three groups anyway.

I can't understand why people hate using Google for usenet groups. I love the format. Tried others, but found I couldn't keep up with the posts. On google, I can look at all the older posts in that thread if I want to. And the first page shows me if any older threads (off the first page) have new posts to them. There's also a really good search function. And you can tell at a glance whether you really want to read the post or not. And if you don't, it's still there tomorrow when you realize you really did want to read it. I guess I'll just have to stay a lower life form. ;)

I think it's a matter of what I'm used to. Using the eternal-september.org server in Outlook Express is just like using my AT&T server was before AT&T dropped newsgroups. The google format doesn't thread the same way. I find it slow and confusing. I know some people love it, though.

Me three. I read this group through Google, and like it.

I agree - it depends what you're used to. I tried google groups didn't like it. I prefer to read email and newsgroups with thunderbird....very simple interface which I like when all I want to do is READ!!!

I'm just a cranky old former geek I guess. I like dedicated software. One piece of software for a given job, and it darn well better be small, sleek, elegantly written, and dead sexy. Reading newsgroups on google feels like peeling potatos with a spoon. Running multipurpose software feels like wearing granny's gardening clothes to a wedding. You have a lot of pockets and you are not naked, but it is just not on.

But hey, that is just me. YMMV

I did not like reading RCTQ via google news groups until I discovered Options->View as Tree This option highlights a thread's unread messages in the tree. You can collapse/expand messages. It makes it much easier for me.

I do have Outlook Express setup to read RCTQ on my laptop, but I find that I usually read it via Google in spite of that.
