On Topic Rant - Sort of long

To Quote '"Casablanca", Vultures, Vultures everywhere.

I have my quilting Mo-Jo back and am just starting today, to quilt the sandwich for the "winter weight" quilt for our bed. It is a 9-patch with cornerstones and sashing, composed of soft red, pinkish peach, green/gold, and beige prints , in the nine patch, aqua green sashing, with soft brown cornerstones and binding, with gold highlight detail print. I really like the way it came out and am looking forward to finishing it; to say nothing about looking forward to the additional warmth it will provide. I had to take it easy, for a while, as the 2 fingers of the left hand, Index and California salute finger, were the ones that sustained the boo-boo. They scabbed over and now the scab has is coming off and they allow me the full range of motion that I previously had. Still tender at the tips but the Doc says that will diminish with time as the fingers completely heal. More of a problem touch typing than quilting. I have a bunch of plans for furniture pieces. One of them is for a large tall armoire quilt storage cabinet with shelves, and a brass grill mesh on the doors, and an open 2 level wall hung display rack for an alcove that runs the length of a wall in the Attic room. I have taken that space over for a machine quilting room. I put the Janome up there and am thinking about getting a Grace Mini Pinni quilting frame. Not for sure yet, but I am leaning that way. It is the only place I have that can accommodate a frame of that size. I about went nuts, sitting around with an immobilized left hand. I am a rather compulsive worker, as some of you know, and for me to sit still for any length of time is a testament to my desire to get through this period as soon as possible. I did a lot of reading and watching politics on CNN and MSNBC, but that can only go so far to holding my interest. Well, it is back to me and my machine today. Good to be back in harness. So sorry, I won't be able to distribute any of the furniture, right now, but I have placed each and every one of you in the will. I hope that doesn't start a cat fight when word of my untimely demise hits the papers.

No quilt police, so no definition of what a "real" quilt is. At least that's what I think.

I'll refrain from commenting any further on the lady in question.

As many have said, just don't give her comments any more thought. People who find they must belittle others to feel good about themselves are not worth thinking about. Life it too short for that. Besides it takes up quilting time so stop worrying about her comments and get back to quilting!!!!

You're not wrong (you knew that already) and you have plenty of company! There's room in quilting for all sorts, and no quilt police. Although some people seem inclined to try! Roberta in D

I'm just teasing John. The house here is full. I tease if I got a bigger house I would still need a bigger house. It is true though. Glad you are healing and able to do more. 24/7 of news and tv is a grim thing. Your quilt sounds great but the armoire sounds like it will be a really special piece of furniture. Be careful with those sharp tools! Taria

Oh dear, such control. I wouldn't have said anything to her, but I have the ability to smile, raise my eyebrows, and look like I'm smothering a hearty laugh all at the same time. Since you'll have to deal with this unhappy woman again, I hope you master the look. Body language is very expressive!

Steve:

I have been an admirer of your quilts, and think that person is way off base in her opinion. You are a good quilter and you make people warm and happy when you give them a quilt. So, ignore her. On the other hand, I wonder why you mentioned the family's political and career affiliations. Some of my best friends are police or military or Republican. What does that have to do with the price of calico in Kodiak?! That said, I again suggest you ignore this person ... she is a tad ignorant and more than a tad rude. That's what I think about your foolish colleague. If you want to know what I think about quilt backs, read on.

My opinion is that lots of people prefer a busy print on the back so as to camouflage any crooked stitches. (I do not disparage this ... I occasionally do that if my quilting design will be complex and I am uncertain about the outcome.) Some people are justifiably proud of their quilting stitches and like a solid fabric to show it off.

Mostly, I choose my fabric from my stash. I have lots of solids and am glad to use those up ... especially for wall quilts or table runners. I don't have much plain muslin, but I use the plain colored fabric. I do like to use the prints for sleeping quilts ... especially for small nap or baby quilts, as the back will often be displayed. Lots of times I mix several prints for a pieced back. IOW, I use what I have and/or what is on sale. Most of the quilters I know have similar attitudes about the quilt backs.

JO: Thanks for this wonderful quote!! I will share it with my family and with my quilting bee tomorrow. Here it is again, in case someone missed your post. Pat in Virginia

Howdy!

But! But! BUT!!! That's her opinion. And she gave it to you for FREE! And what are Free Opinions worth?

So you held the high ground and didn't blast her out of her ditch. Good for you. Miss Manners would be proud. This is when those old "Southren"-isms come to mind: "Oh, bless your heart; aren't you sweet!" "Oh, darlin', aren't you the cutest thing! People in the Real Quilt World gave up those ideas years ago. But you just keep on tryin' and you'll get there, too." "Why thank you, Hon. A free opinion and ever'thang-- bless yore heart!"

So, Steve, what are you working on now?

Steve, I agree with what the others have been telling you. ((SHE's a TEACHER???)) And what the He!! is she "showing" the students by her behavior??? She sounds like she could've been one of the class bullies when she was younger (if not at the present time!)... These type of people are usually soooo insecure that the only way they can feel good about themselves is to put others down.

Having said that, congratulations on your mature outlook AND your actions. She's not worth the trouble to get upset over. Your work, btw, is awesome!

Steve's too much of a gentleman, I think ... p'raps I could hold her down and you could kick her? I'd do it, but I broke my toe the other day ...

After that, you and I (and Steve) could rifle through her stash! 'Course, just to add insult to injury, we'd have to make fun of it, first. Though it would hurt to belittle fabric! ;)

Nah ... she'd be too "artsy" for that ... she probably *only* chooses fabric made with brand new $100 bills woven together with the silken eyelashes of bona fide unicorns gently nutured on the grass grown on the lush undersea hills and vales of Atlantis.

Anything else simply would *not* be artsy enough for her!!

(sorry if (?) that was lame - my brain's not working very well today - need more caffeine and more chocolate!!)

Well then bite her on the leg after Amy has tenderized it.

Really I _am_ surprised you didn't think of that yourself.
