OT: Building a website

I seem to remember several months back that someone posted a place where you can buy a domain name fairly cheaply. My Guild is finally getting ready to build our own website & I said I'd see if I could get that information again.

Also - does anyone know what qualifies you to be a .org as opposed to a .com? It looks like both domain names are available, but I'd hate to take .org if we aren't really entitled to it.

Thanks!

I think (and know that someone will correct me if I am wrong) that you can only have a dot com website if you are a commercial organisation selling something.

Otherwise a dot org is perfect, as it stands for "organisation". I own the domain

which is for our re-enactment group, a non-profit making hobby organisation.

Anyways, aren't dot org domains cheaper than dot coms?! That'd work buckets in my book - if its cheap I'll have 2!

theres also .gen. my dd uses that for her site. not sure what the difference is re cost/who can use it. .edu .com .gen. org. co.(country code) .com.(country code) the choices seem to be neverending and they keep adding more choices by the day. amazing really. found this site with some info that might help with your choice.

Now I don't want anyone to think I know it all because I do not but I have designed web sites for over 10 years now.

When the web was first started dot net was for computer companies, ISPs, and that sorta of thing, actually it was for ISP's and such I am not really sure about the computer companies, dot com was for businesses and org was for non profit organizations. dot org has pretty much stayed for not for profit organizations but dot net and com have crossed over and can be used for anything. When I purchase a domain name I always buy the net, com and org versions if they are available because if you site is popular someone will come along and buy the others and put sites that we do not like to see on line there in hopes that they mess up and end up there. Also, if a popular name closes and goes up for sale they do the same thing.

I know nothing about websites and don't want to!!! But my hubby is good at it and he chose Go Daddy for our church's website. He had everything up and running in just a few days and has a great listing placement on all the search engines. I was impressed with that.

Tonight I was asked to design a site for a chat group I go to, they apparently knew I would because the password and username have some info about me in it. LOL Any way it is on Go Daddy so I must now eat those words. I hope to have it up by tomorrow. I haven't done any work on things like this since my last computer crash and have learned that I don't have all my programs installed.

So far I have not found a problem with Go daddy, just hope the load time is OK that is where you lose a lot of visitors.

Thank you everyone for your input. We're having a meeting this week to bring all the information we've gathered about setting up our website, so I have lots of good info to share! Hopefully, we'll be up & running within a couple of weeks - finally!!
