I'm not sure which letters you mean. Assuming your talking about Windows, do you mean under the icons or in the task bar? In either case, you'll find settings for how your desktop/screen appears in your "control panel" settings. Look around - different versions (XP, Vista, etc.) are set up slightly differently.

Do you mean the desktop color used to show through your letters, but now you have a "label" or rectangle of a color behind the letters? Or vice-versa? There is a way to change it from one or the other, but I can't remember how.... rats. Will check with the resident geek as soon as he is back in residence. Meanwhile, maybe somebody else here knows?

Try right clicking on the desktop. In most windows systems that will give you a menu.

Mouse over "active desktop", then click on "customize my desktop"

Now you should be in a window, at the top are tabs, the first one should be "background". Click on the background tab, and you should get a little window with a list in it, the first item on the list should be "nothing", click on that to select it, and then click the button at the bottom that says "apply"

Bear in mind that "nothing" equals "plain blue". If you want white or anther plain color, you have to make a picture that is nothing but that color and browse for it.

I am writing this from memory and double checking on the machine I am on which is ME. The XP machine is being modded at the moment (swapping some drives around amongst the machines in the house) so I cannot check my directions on it. It should be right though, microsoft does not seem to alter such stuff significantly from version to version.
