OT: DH Rescued a Kitten (long)!

Hi Guys, Well, DH returned home from a 2 day business trip this PM. He walked in the door and the first words out of his mouth were "We have an emergency!" I'm thinking he's had an accident and start to fly up out of my chair only to find him gently walking into the family room with a tiny little kitten clasped to his chest! He immediately give me the little guy who snuggles up to my chest as I wrap him in my lap blanket. DH goes off to get a saucer of milk while I inspect the little guy. It is a boy kitty and he has been hurt something awful! ALL of the fur around his little neck from one ear to the other in a t least an inch wide swath has been ripped away. He's started to heal and there's minimal scabbing but a lot of dried, raw looking angry flesh. DH returns with the milk and the little guy hunkers down and starts to drink for all he's worth. I would be hard pressed to put him at 8 weeks old. Once he's had his fill of milk, he snuggles down and goes right to sleep while I hold him close and pet the top of his little head. He's a little white and gray tabby and DH found him about a mile or two from the house on a busy street. DH first thought he was looking at a leaf skitter across the street but when it wobbled and changed direction, he noticed it was a kitten. He stopped the truck and went to check and found the little guy hunkered down by someone's garbage -- probably looking for food! He let DH pick him up and did nothing more than mewl a bit all the way home. After holding him on my lap for about 20 minutes, I needed to come upstairs and he let me carry him along with no problem. He was likely too weak to be able to do much other than meow. Once up here and at the computer, I had the little guy on my lap wrapped in a large towel. DH brought up the saucer of milk, got another of water and then brought up a little bit of soft food -- maybe a level tbsp. as I didn't want to give the little guy too much at first and have him ralph it all up! Little Guy (his new name for now) immediately started to strain to get to the food and when I rotated the little plate to make it easier for him to get at it, he growled for all he was worth -- LOLOL! He finished the food, had a bit more milk and then snuggled down for another bit of a rest. After that food stayed down successfully I had DH bring in a bit of dry food. The pieces are a bit large for Little Guy but he managed to eat every last bit! After some more milk, a bit of water and another little nap, I decided it was bed time. Besides, I needed to have my bath and get to bed! So we got a huge box and put another towel in it along with a smaller box with litter and the smallest cat bed with Little Guy in it with his towel. The milk and water are ian there too and I covered the top with a screen. No problem keeping Little Guy in

-- he's too weak to climb out, I think -- I don't want the other cats trying to get inside to see who this newbie is!! He got up, had a bit more milk & water and then went right back to sleep and hasn't made a sound since and that was about 1 1/2 hrs. ago. I left a message at my vet about him and said I would phone first thing tomorrow AM and I wanted to bring him in ASAP to have his poor, wounded little neck looked at. So -- NO I won't be keeping him -- I don't do male cats, just female and three cats is one more than my limit. We will foster him until his neck is all healed and hopefully grows some hair back. If the vet can't find a home for him, then we will take him to Cats-In-The-Cradle, the no-kill shelter that we got our two new babies from. I did call DD and let her know about Little Guy. The SMDGD desperately wants to have a kitty and I think this kitty would be great. The problem will be with Steven, my DSonIL. He gets all huffy when discussing a new cat. He says HE wants to be the one to chose the next cat. I bet that Raechel (the SMDGD) will be able to have some say about this. Especially considering that HER GrandFather SAVED this little kitty from going to Kitty Heaven, etc. I told DD that if they should want Little Guy, GrandFather could bring him to AZ when he comes in September to meet me and help close up the cabin :-). Regardless of WHO ends up with Little Guy, he could use some "good stuff" from everyone so that he heals up OK and overcomes any trauma. I told DH this is what we get for being on a first name basis with St. Frank -- LOLOL! Needless to say, until he is all healed, he will be staying HERE with his new foster family. And the other cats didn't seem to mind his smell or anything -- imagine that!! Miracles never cease to happen, do they :-))). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Such a lovely story, Mary. Good for you and your kind DH. I hope he thrives and has a happy life somewhere, perhaps even with little GrandDaughter! Thanks for sharing the 'happening'. . In message , Tia Mary writes

Thanks for sharing this story about Little Guy. My son and I have rescued dogs we find on the side of the road or in the country, where they have been put out. I often see animals being offered on Freecycle, so that is also something to consider when this kitty heals up. Barbara in SC

How good was that! :)

Little Guy probably won't cause so many ructions with settling in because he's a different sex. Sometimes a same-sex addition is a rival, where a different sex one isn't. The girls will accept him because he's a baby and a boy.

Boy kitties are great. I love mine - he's bonkers and stupid, but adorable!

Beautiful story, Mary. Thank you. A nice way to begin the day here. It just could be that the Little Guy was attacked by a dog with instincts that our Yorkie has. We have to be extremely careful to let him be around an alive tiny furry creature. Yogi has 'gone for the throat' of many a teddy bear and toy hippopotamus and we figure he'd do the same with something 'real'. Yogi is as gentle as a lamb with toddlers and toads but kittens bring out his Dark Ages kill mode. Hug your precious DH for us. He's a keeper. Polly

Rethink the no male cat thing. Our male cats have always been our sweetest, most loving cats.

If you weren't so far away we'd glad adopt him.

I have had male cats before and don't like having to deal with the tendency to spray to mark territory. Little Guy is VERY sweet and if he sees either of us meows until one of us picks him up :-). He's going to be a cuddly lover, that's for sure. The three cats we already have is one cat more than my self-imposed limit so taking a fourth cat isn't a goal. Then again, DH is liable to decide "we" can handle four cats which means HE wants to keep Little Guy -- LOLOL! I was looking at his poor little neck and tend to agree with Polly. it really looks like Little Guy might have been attached by some other animal. There don't appear to be any puncture wounds, just raw, oozing skin with no fur. The edges are still oozing a bit so I will be glad to get him to the Baby Dr. We have a 9:30 appointment and Little Guy was even nice enough to leave something behind in his temporary litter box for me to take along for testing -- YUCK LOLOL! I'll let everyone know how he is doing once we get back home. OH -- a quick update on Ivy Jane (the Garbanzo Brain Stealth Kitty). She follow me from room to room and has to be within sight of me, unless she's asleep, of course. She will now let me pet her whenever I am feeding them but it's still at arms length. She does the brushing up against my legs when I am getting the canned food ready and REALLY likes to have head scratches. Not bad for totally wigged out scardycat who has only been with us for just six months! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Our male cats, neutered, never sprayed inside, but I have seen our last female cat spraying outside when we had an unwelcome strange cat visitor. I've never seen any of our current trio (2 males and 1 female) spraying. Here it is definitely the males who are more affectionate/people loving. Mia is much more 'her own cat' whereas the boys are just giant teddy bears who want to join in all human activity.

What a lucky little cat Little Guy is.

Huh.

I wonder how Yogi would do around one of those hairless cats.

I already have four cats, so I will just well wish Little Guy from afar.

wonderful story, Mary. Glad you have rescued Little Guy.

On the other hand, if your SMDGD wants a kitten/cat sooner, we have several that are adoptable. From not yet weaned to about a year old. (I would love to find homes for some of these cats, and then there are all the outdoor cats that have migrated to our yard. sigh.)

I've actually had my cats bring strays home who are wounded or starving---while they won't tolerate a healthy cat taking over their territory or even trying, they apparently understand when one is desperate and it's something their human can fix or help with.

Of course, once the stray is healthy and/or fed, they're escorted off the property, if they're still hanging around.......but by then, it's a different issue :)

Piggybacking Kate here. First off, whether he realized it or not, Little Guy certainly got the right people's attention! I *know* he will do well under your care. :-)

Secondly, my cat is male, and yes, he's different than the girlie cats, but quite social, onery, and loyal. I love my boy cat too.

Best regards, Michelle in Nevada, USA (who is secretly hoping DGD will get to have Little Guy)

If your DH does decide you can handle 4 kitties, then I suggest getting Little Guy neutered early. My male cat, Charley, was neutered when he was 5 months old and never learned to spray.

Glad to hear Ivy Jane is doing so well!

So, Li'l Guy went to the Baby Dr. this AM. I took him at 9:30AM and dropped him off because they didn't have any open appt's. today and were just going to work him in when they had time. The Dr. phoned me at about 12:30 PM saying that he was doing well and his fecal test came back negative as did his feline leukemia, etc. tests which is good for a stray kitty. Now, for the WEIRD part. That whole business with his neck being devoid of fur and looking all swollen, etc. was NOT the result of an attack or a run in with a vehicle, etc. The poor little kitty had a wolf worm!!! I have never ever heard of this sort of creature and wish I never had! Apparently the "parent" laid it's eggs or whatever on Li'l Guys neck and it had hatched and just stayed put. The horrid thing had burrowed into the kitty's neck and was feeding off of him -- YUCK is just not strong enough!!!!! They removed the nasty thing and it was about the size of the first two joints of my pinkie or the size of a large grape when rolled up -- makes me shudder just to think about it. So now Li'l Guy had been cleaned up and has no more weepy nasties around his bald neck but he does have this huge hole on the side of his neck which I have to put Neosporin on several times a day. It's about as big around as a good sized pea which is big for a little kitty that doesn't even weigh a full pound. He's just barely 15 oz. and the Dr. thought he was more likely closer to 6 weeks old than 8 weeks! Surprising how quickly a wild critter can grow up when out in the wild. Now for the fun part. You will never guess WHO is being cat mom for Li'l Guy?!?!? Not Bunny Sue who was a new mom this time last year. Not Ivy Jane who is so shy and hides a lot. It's Cassie the Old Lady Baby Cat! She has really taken to Li'l Guy and has not made one hiss or growl or anything. Nothing like she was when I brought the other girls home :-). I had Li'l Guy on my lap with Cassie's blankie earlier tonight to give him some loves and some medicine and Cassie jumped up and started to sniff him and just check him out. She had no problem with him being on my lap and using HER blankie. She doesn't even allow the other cats into the family room let alone be on Mom's lap or get near HER blankie -- LOLOL! Cassie likes to lounge in the bathtub and was in there when DH and I came upstairs a little bit ago. We took Li'l Guy and put him in the tub with her and she sniffed him all over and then started to clean his ears and make sure his tush was clean, etc. He did the head butt thing asking for a little love from her and she just sat down and started to groom him. He decided he wanted to get feisty and reached up and smacked her in the face and she just backed up a bit and let him be a P.I.T.A. -- nor argument at all. He spent the evening in the guest bathroom with his kitten chow and the toys, etc. I didn't want him sneaking around the house and snuggling down somewhere because I didn't want to have to look for him to give him his antibiotics. Right now he's in the huge box next to our bed again for this evening. I didn't have the heart to leave him alone in the bathroom for the night. I want to make sure he can find the "big cats" litter boxes in the laundry room before I turn him loose in the house. This is a big two story house and I'm not sure he'll make it up the stairs and to the laundry room in time if he needs to go potty -- LOLOL! So, good news here on the home front. Now to get him all healed up and find a GOOD home for him. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Yep, long....but worth every word! What an amazing story. But I probably could have gone on just fine with my life without ever knowing about wolf worm. BLAH and BLAH BLAH

A big hurrah for you and DH and one for the Li'l Guy!
