Thanks Jeanne. I thought it was some sort of sewing or embroidery stitch. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Garter stitch is knit every row. Stockinette stitch is knit one row, purl one row. Garter stitch results is a ridged appearance. Stockinette stitch is smooth on one side, rough on the other.

Elly - Knitty has a very popular garter stitch beanie called Tychus. The pattern is available in their archives -

Garter stitch is all knit rows. The first stitch that learner's make. When you knit a row then turn and purl a row you have stocking stitch. Unless you are knitting in the round on double pointed needles, then you get stocking stitch by knitting from the same side, no turning. Hope this helps. Shirley

THANK YOU EVERYONE, ALL I GOT TO DO NOW IS DECIDE WHICH IS THE EASIEST TO DO

I used to knit years ago and I dabbled a little bit in crocheting. But since being introduced to quilting they have gone by the way. :) I'll post a pic in webshots, hopefully with DS modelling it :D just as soon as I've gotten around to knitting it.

Cheers everyone, Elly

Small correction: garter stitch looks more or less the same on both sides (horizontal ridges) and results if you knit every row. Roberta in D
