Altering a store bought beanie hat

Hi all,

I'm getting back into sewing very slowly. I primarily work patch quilts or other sewn pattern crafts. Very rarly will I try to alter something store bought.

I bought a stocking beanie hat for a friend who has a small head. The hat has a embroidery design on the brim and the only way it fits his head properly is to fold the brim and doing that we can't see the wonderful design.

I want to unstitch the crown and restitch it so that I don't loose the rounded form that was previously stictched. I understand the concept of unripping the seam and trying to lower the seam and all that. however when I did so I didn't do it strait enough and I can't seem to get the dart on the side to make the bowl shap of the hat just right.

Does anyone have any suggestions that might help me in making the crown of the hat more of a bowl shape (like my friends bald head LOL). I'm just at a loss with out having a pattern to trace.

Thanks a million. Sammy

I had a gilligan hat that was too big. I picked the band off, snipped a half inch out of it, and eased the crown vigorously while sewing it back on.

Fits fine now -- except that the brim is too wide. I tend to wear it on the back of my head.
