OT: Good news about my nephew! :D

My nephew (really, my step-nephew ) has made it to Dallas from NO and should be boarding a plane right about now to get to his mother in Washington! Yippee! I'm so relieved! He had a hard time getting out of NO (not as hard as some, though), and ended up with nothing more than the clothes he was wearing. But the family is pulling together to re-outfit him for work. He's lucky in another respect, in that the company he works for has promised to put all of their displaced employees to work in one or another of their locations nation-wide. Whew! Things could be so much worse.

And now, someone please tell me why *my* phone isn't working when I'm nowhere near the hurricane??? ;) I'm lucky that my DSL is working, though I can't understand why, since the phone isn't and they use the same lines.... At least the phone company is forwarding my calls to my cell phone, largely because we've been waiting for word of my nephew. As I said, things could be lots worse. :)

My DSIL and her 2 daughters live and work in Hammond, LA and I have not located her on any of the lists. Please pray with me that she and the girls are both okay. She lived just north of NO and the lake that flooded. It was right in the path of the worst of the storm. Hoping she was one of the smart ones who evacuated early but don't know for sure.

They are on the prayer list now, don't worry.

That's good news, Sandy.

Last evening, I happened to think that the daughter of one of my cousins lives in New Orleans. I "googled" her name and found a news report about her. She had had a baby on Sunday, but by Wednesday afternoon, she, her boyfriend, and the baby had gotten to the Baton Rouge airport, hoping to get to her sister in Arizona. Katy (the new mom) and her twin brother were born in 1965 the middle of one of Minnesota's worst-ever snow storms, when it took all day to get 8 miles or so to the hospital with the snow plows just ahead of them. Looks like she thinks she has some kind of tradition to carry on!

Wow! I"m so glad she's safe -- I know the feeling of worrying and not being able to do anything. I've sent in my monetary donations and am hoping that things begin to improve for these poor hurricane victims. We're told to expect an influx of refugees here in the LV area, since we do have a tourist-dominated economy; a lot of the people in those sorts of jobs will be able to find work here. In fact, some of the hotels (the Harrah's chain) are advertising free rooms for people with ID from the hurricane-ravaged areas. That includes places like Caesar's Palace -- a very nice place to stay! So even this city is trying to do its part. :)

My brother and DSIL have been separated since he retired from the Army after

30 years of service. She was teaching at LSU last I heard. I just wish when people have marital problems they could realize that there are other family members who don't stop loving them and caring about what happens to them.
